Abstract

The combination of a urine container and a lid therefor, the lid having a top part with two recessed areas covered by a cap. The cap is formed of two sections hingedly connected to one another. By pressing one cap section in one recessed area, the other cap section is lifted from the other recessed area allowing the dispensing of urine through an opening in this recessed area. Closure of the cap is effected by pressing the lifted cap section downwardly over its recessed area to block the opening.

Description

CA 0222333~ 1997-12-03 TITLE OF THE INVENTION
Combination of a urine container and lid therefor.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention pertains to the combination of a urine 5 container and of a lid for allowing the dispensing of urine from the container.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
At present, urine containers consist of a cylindrical body covered by a cap which may be secured thereto in various ways. The dispensing of urine is accomplished by removing the cap and dispensing the 10 urine by pouring or by drawing a sample by means of a pipette. The cap is then replaced on the container for further dispensing. The cap must also be removed in cases where a sample is poured into a tube in which is dipped a band having chemical indicators thereon. Evidently, such operations require some manual skill to avoid spillage; furthermore, there is 15 the possibility of urine being contaminated accidently when the container is opened to air or, alternatively, exposed urine may be a cause for contamination. Also, the removal of the cap causes odour displeasure. In cases where the urine is poured, some of it may drip along the outer wall of the container or retained in threads in cases where the cap is threadedly 20 engaged to the container.

OBJECTS AND STATEMENT OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the present invention to overcome the above problems by providing a combination of container and lid for urine where there is very little exposure of urine to the atmosphere or to those 25 manipulating such containers for collection of samples.

CA 0222333~ 1997-12-03 It is also object of the present invention to provide a container and lid where the manipulation thereof does not require removal of the lid from the container.

It is also an object of the invention to provide such container 5 and lid combination wherein its manipulation may require the use of one hand only.

The present invention therefore relates to a combination of a urine container and lid therefor wherein the container is a generally cylindrical open body with a bottom wall and a side wall having an upper 10 peripheral edge. The lid has a main circular portion covering the container with a peripheral portion adapted for engagement with the side wall of the container. The circular part displays a cap covering a pair of recessed areas one of which includes an opening for the dispensing of urine from the container. The cap is formed of a pair of sections hingedly connected to one 15 another; a first of these sections has a shape to cover the first recessed area while a second has a shape to cover the second recessed area. The first section has, on an inner face thereof, means for blocking the opening when the cap securely covers the recessed areas. Means associated with the recessed areas cooperate with the cap when external pressure is exerted on 20 the second section of the cap to hinge the first section upwardly to uncover the first recessed area and to remove the blocking means from the opening to allow the dispensing of urine from the container.

Other objects and further scope of applicability of the present invention will become apparent from the detailed description given 25 hereinafter. It should be understood, however, that this detailed description, while indicating preferred embodiments of the invention, is given by way of illustration only, since various changes and modifications within the spirit andscope of the invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art.

CA 0222333~ 1997-12-03 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combination of a urine container and lid therefor made in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an exploded view showing a side elevation of the 5 container and a cross-section of the lid in the closed position;
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view similar to that of figure 2 showing the lid in the opened position;
Figure 4 is an elevational partly cross-sectional view showing the side walls of the container being depressed;
Figure 5 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of part of the container and lid prior to closure; and Figure 6 is an enlarged cross-sectional view similar to that of figure 5 showing the lid in a closed position onto the container.

DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
Referring to figure 1, there is shown the combination of a container, generally denoted 10, and of a lid, generally denoted 12.

Referring also to figure 2, the container 10 has a generally cylindrical open body 12 having a side wall 13 and a bottom wall 14. The side wall 13 has areas 16 of greater thickness than that of areas 18, thus 20 allowing areas 18 to be compressed as illustrated in figure 4 and described further hereinbelow.

The side wall 13 of the container comprises a peripheral shoulder 20 and an upper peripheral edge 22 from which extends a flexible flange 24, the function of which will be described further hereinbelow.

The lid 12 has a circular configuration with a top wall and a peripheral portion adapted for engaging the side wall of the container. The top wall displays an annular edge area 26 and a circular central area 28, CA 0222333~ 1997-12-03 distanced from the peripheral edge 26 by means of an annular groove 30.
The circular central area 28 displays a pair of recessed areas 32 and 34 which are divided by a transverse wall 36. The recessed area 34 has a downwardly inclined bottom wall 38 while recessed area 32 has a bottom 5 wall 40 which is substantially horizontal and is at a height slightly above that of the inclined wall 38. Bottom wall 40 displays an opening 42, a portion of which defines a spout 44.

The lid 12 also comprises a cap, generally denoted 46, which is integrally formed with the remaining part of the lid through a tongue 50.
The main part of the cap 46 is formed of two sections 52 and 54 which are divided by a line of restricted thickness to define a hinge. The underface of cap section 52 has a small cylindrical projection 58 having an outer diameter slightly less than the inner diameter of opening 42 of the recessed area 32.

The surface areas of sections 52 and 54 are slightly less than 15 the surface areas of the recessed areas 32 and 34 so as to be adapted to fall within their respective recessed areas.

A tight fit is however required between the cap and the recessed areas: this may be achieved by having the peripheral edges of the cap sections frictionnally engaged to the side faces of the recessed areas.
20 Also, this tightness may be achieved by having a tight engagement of the projection 58 into the opening 42.

There are various ways of securing the lid 12 to the container 10 such as for example by a locking engagement of an arm 60 on the inner wall of the lid with a lug 62 on the container side wall. A threaded 25 engagement of lid to container is also possible.

CA 0222333~ 1997-12-03 The operation of the lid will now be described. Referring to figure 2, with one hand holding the container, a thumb pressure is exerted on the top wall of the cap section 54 causes it to be pushed into the recessed area 34 onto the bottom wall 38. In so doing, the hinge line 56 5 causes the upward lifting of the cap section 52 thereby freeing the projection58 from opening 42 and also removing the cap section 54 from its covering arrangement over the recessed area 32. Hence, the dispensing of the urine from the container is accomplished simply by pouring out the urine from the opening 42 or, in other cases, by inserting a pipette through the opening for 10 collecting samples of the urine. Also, a band with chemical indicators thereon may be inserted through opening 42 for testing. Once this operation is carried out, closure of the lid is simply accomplished again by thumb pressure onto the outer wall of the cap section 52 whereby projection 58 is inserted in opening 42 to block it.

To provide a fluid tight engagement between the lid and the container, the upper edge 22 of the container has a flexible flange 24 which is compressed (see figure 6) when the lid is secured to the container.

Although the invention has been described above with respect with one specific form, it will be evident to a person skilled in the art that it 20 may be modified and refined in various ways. It is therefore wished to have it understood that the present invention should not be limited in scope, except by the terms of the following claims.
