Abstract

A cytological screening system assists a cytotechnologist to determine the presence of "abnormal" cells in a cytological specimen. The system includes a microscope with a motorized stage, autofocus lens, video camera and image capturing and image analysis systems. The specimen is scanned, and cells with characteristics falling outside ranges determined by the system specifically for the specimen are marked for analysis. Analysis is performed by utilizing a set of weighted characteristics, which are based in part of the individual medical history of the patient. Cells with a combination of characteristics which fall outside a predetermined range are determined to be abnormal and are identified for further analysis by the cytotechnologist. Alternatively, the system provides relational information and reference material during the manual screening process.
