Abstract

A method of and apparatus for roller expanding an insert inside the damaged inlet end of a parent tube uses spacers between the stops on the mandrel and on the tapered rod of the roller expander. The spacers prevent the tapered rod from expanding the insert more than a pre-set amount, thus preventing over or under expansion of the insert. The relative stopping positions of the stops on the mandrel and on the tapered rod are adjusted so that the tapered rod is slidable into the mandrel no further than is required to expand the insert to an inner diameter substantially equal to the inside diameter of the parent tube less the thickness of the insert.
