Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION
A nail file having a top curved filing section merging with a pair of spaced apart flat side filing sections, each said flat side filing section tapering towards said top curved filing section so as to produce a small curved surface at one end of said nail file and a relatively larger curved surface at the other end thereof.

FIELD OF INVENTION

This invention relates to nail files and particularly relates to nail files having a curved cross section with flat side filing portions.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVEN7rION
Modern fashion and cleanliness generally require humans to care for their hands and, in particular, fingernails. It is very common for humans and, in particular, ladies to have their fingernails well cared for.
' A variety of filing instruments have heretofore been utilized to file or :
remove roughness from human fingernails. Such filing instruments generally comprise a flat file made of steel or sandpaper. Such flat files are not generally well adapted to clean the underside of a human finger.
It is an object of this invention to produce an improved nail file which incorporates a flat surface as well as a curved surface.

It is a further object of this invention to provide a nail file and a method of utilizing same which is advantageous to a fingernail.

It is an aspect of this invention to provide a nail file having a curved portion adapted to file the underside of a finger nail.
It is another aspect of this invention to provide a nail file having a flat portion and a curved portion adapted to file the underside of a finger nail.
It is yet another aspect of this invention to provide a nail file having a top filing section merging with a pair of spaced apart side filing sections, each said side filing section tapering towards said top curved filing section so as to produce a small cuned surface at one end of said nail file and a relatively larger curved surface at the other end of said nail file.
It is another aspect of this invention to provide a method a filing a human finger nail with a nail file having a top curved filing section merging with a pair of spaced apart flat side filing sections, each said flat side filing section tapering towards said top curved filing section so as to produce a small curved sur~ace at one end of said nail file and a relatively larger curved surface at the other end thereof, including the steps of: utilizing one of said flat sides to file the underside but not the side of said fingernail so as to produce a filed tip edge; utilizing said smaller curved surface so as to remove roughness on the underside of the filed tip edge of said fingernail; and utilizing said relatively larger curved surface to remove roughness on the top side of said human fingernaiL

Figure 5 is alternate side view of the nail file.
Figure 6 is a side elevational view of the flat side surfa~es filing the underside but not the sides of a human fingernail.
Figure 7 is a side elevational view showing the filing of a short nail.
~2~$~7 DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Like parts will be given like numbers throughout the figure.
Figure 1 generally describes the nail file 2 which comprises a top culved section or portion 4 merging with a pair of flat side filing section 6 so as to produce a curved cross section as best illustrated in Figure 2.
,, Each of thç flat side filing sections 6 taper towards the top curved filing section 4 so as to produce or define a small curved sur~ace 8 at one end of the file 2 and a relatively larger curved surface 10 at the other end of the nail file 2.
The smaller curved surface is best seen in Figure 1 and is adapted to remove roughness from the underside of a human fingernail due to the small size of same.
The larger curved surface 10, on the other hand, is adapted to remove roughness from the top of a human fingernail.
Each of the flat side filing surfaces 6 is well adapted to file or remove roughness from the underside bue not the sides of a human fingernail as shown in Figure 6.

In one embodiment shown in Figure 3 the flat side filing surface 6 shows a small curved section 8 at the front of the file 2 and a relatively larger curved section 10 at the back end of the file 2.
The bottom edge of the flat side filing surface 6 includes the tapered pOFtion 12 referred to earlier as well as a curved back portion 14.
In an alternative embodiment the file 2 includes side filing section 6 h~ving a tapered portion 12 substantially along the bottom thereof with an angled portion or straight edge 16 at the back end thereof.
The inventor herein emphasizes that the file 2 utilized herein should not be used to file the side edge 18 of a human nail but rather the underside 20 on the basis that most of the strength and stability of the nail 22 is derived from the side edge 18. Cutting, filing or damaging the side edge 18 will usually weaken the nail 22 and invite fraying, chipping and flaking to invade the nail tip 24.
Any fraying, chipping or flaking of the tip 24 or edge 18 will extend downward, working its way along and between the tubular structures of the human nail that run lengthwise to make up the nail plate.
2 ~ 2 8 6 ~ ~f The user of the nail file 2 described herein may utilize same in connection with short nails to provide strong, healthy growth by filing the nail 22 blunt as shown in Figure 7. The nail file 2 should not touch the side edge 2 of the nail 22.
All splits, chips, cracks and flakes should be removed by utilizing the flat surface 6 of the nail file 2. In some cases the nail 22 may have to grow out a little more before any of the damage can be removed with the file 2. If this is the case, one should remove all damage of the nail 22 at the tip as it grows until there is no damage left.
Attempting to file out damage at the side edge 18 of the nail 22 while leaving the centre of the nail 22 will usually result in further breaking of the nail structure 22. The sharp point of the nail 22 resulting from the filing may be taken off carefully by utilizing the nail file 2 by being careful not to touch the side edge 18 of the nail 22.
I'he blunt filing shown in Figure 7 should be continued until there is sufficient healthy, strong growth with which the filing for longer nails to be described herein can be accomplished without loss or damage to the side edge 18. A gradual transition from the blunt filing to a 45 filing to be described below is encouraged.
Figure 6 shows the use of the file 2 for long nails. The blunt filing described above should be utilized to remove all damaged areas in the extension of the nail plate 22. Once the nail 22 is long enough the nail 22 should be slowly and gently filed in a side to side motion with the flat surface 6 of the nail file 2 gradually tilting the flat surface 6 of the file 2 until one is iling the nail 22 at a 45 angle.

The entire tip edge 24 of the nail 22 is preferably in contact with the flat surface 6 of the file 2. When this procedure is properly performed the file surface 6 will not come in contact with the side edge 18 of the nail 22. At the same time the filing procedure produces a natural curve to the nail tip. This natural cuIve is now ready for a gentle modification of shape for uniformity and symmetry by taking off just the sharp point at the edge of the nail tip 22.
The large curved surface 10 may be used to gently round and remove any roughness on the top side of the filed tip edge 24 of nail 22. ..
The small curved surface 8 of the file 2 may be gently used to round and remove any roughness on the underside of the filed tip 24 of the finger.
Although the prefelTed embodiment as well as the operation and use have been specifically described, it should be understood that variations in the preferred embodirnent could easily be achieved by a man skilled in the art without departing ~om the spirit of the invention.

This invention relates to nail files and particularly relates to nail files having a curved cross section with flat side filing portions.

Modern fashion and cleanliness generally require humans to care for their hands and, in particular, fingernails. It is very common for humans and, in particular, ladies to have their fingernails well cared for.
' A variety of filing instruments have heretofore been utilized to file or :
remove roughness from human fingernails. Such filing instruments generally comprise a flat file made of steel or sandpaper. Such flat files are not generally well adapted to clean the underside of a human finger.
It is an object of this invention to produce an improved nail file which incorporates a flat surface as well as a curved surface.

It is another aspect of this invention to provide a method a filing a human finger nail with a nail file having a top curved filing section merging with a pair of spaced apart flat side filing sections, each said flat side filing section tapering towards said top curved filing section so as to produce a small curved sur~ace at one end of said nail file and a relatively larger curved surface at the other end thereof, including the steps of: utilizing one of said flat sides to file the underside but not the side of said fingernail so as to produce a filed tip edge; utilizing said smaller curved surface so as to remove roughness on the underside of the filed tip edge of said fingernail; and utilizing said relatively larger curved surface to remove roughness on the top side of said human fingernaiL

~2~$~7 DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

Figure 1 generally describes the nail file 2 which comprises a top culved section or portion 4 merging with a pair of flat side filing section 6 so as to produce a curved cross section as best illustrated in Figure 2.

The smaller curved surface is best seen in Figure 1 and is adapted to remove roughness from the underside of a human fingernail due to the small size of same.
The larger curved surface 10, on the other hand, is adapted to remove roughness from the top of a human fingernail.
Each of the flat side filing surfaces 6 is well adapted to file or remove roughness from the underside bue not the sides of a human fingernail as shown in Figure 6.

In one embodiment shown in Figure 3 the flat side filing surface 6 shows a small curved section 8 at the front of the file 2 and a relatively larger curved section 10 at the back end of the file 2.
The bottom edge of the flat side filing surface 6 includes the tapered pOFtion 12 referred to earlier as well as a curved back portion 14.
In an alternative embodiment the file 2 includes side filing section 6 h~ving a tapered portion 12 substantially along the bottom thereof with an angled portion or straight edge 16 at the back end thereof.
The inventor herein emphasizes that the file 2 utilized herein should not be used to file the side edge 18 of a human nail but rather the underside 20 on the basis that most of the strength and stability of the nail 22 is derived from the side edge 18. Cutting, filing or damaging the side edge 18 will usually weaken the nail 22 and invite fraying, chipping and flaking to invade the nail tip 24.
Any fraying, chipping or flaking of the tip 24 or edge 18 will extend downward, working its way along and between the tubular structures of the human nail that run lengthwise to make up the nail plate.
2 ~ 2 8 6 ~ ~f The user of the nail file 2 described herein may utilize same in connection with short nails to provide strong, healthy growth by filing the nail 22 blunt as shown in Figure 7. The nail file 2 should not touch the side edge 2 of the nail 22.
All splits, chips, cracks and flakes should be removed by utilizing the flat surface 6 of the nail file 2. In some cases the nail 22 may have to grow out a little more before any of the damage can be removed with the file 2. If this is the case, one should remove all damage of the nail 22 at the tip as it grows until there is no damage left.
Attempting to file out damage at the side edge 18 of the nail 22 while leaving the centre of the nail 22 will usually result in further breaking of the nail structure 22. The sharp point of the nail 22 resulting from the filing may be taken off carefully by utilizing the nail file 2 by being careful not to touch the side edge 18 of the nail 22.
I'he blunt filing shown in Figure 7 should be continued until there is sufficient healthy, strong growth with which the filing for longer nails to be described herein can be accomplished without loss or damage to the side edge 18. A gradual transition from the blunt filing to a 45 filing to be described below is encouraged.
Figure 6 shows the use of the file 2 for long nails. The blunt filing described above should be utilized to remove all damaged areas in the extension of the nail plate 22. Once the nail 22 is long enough the nail 22 should be slowly and gently filed in a side to side motion with the flat surface 6 of the nail file 2 gradually tilting the flat surface 6 of the file 2 until one is iling the nail 22 at a 45 angle.

The entire tip edge 24 of the nail 22 is preferably in contact with the flat surface 6 of the file 2. When this procedure is properly performed the file surface 6 will not come in contact with the side edge 18 of the nail 22. At the same time the filing procedure produces a natural curve to the nail tip. This natural cuIve is now ready for a gentle modification of shape for uniformity and symmetry by taking off just the sharp point at the edge of the nail tip 22.
The large curved surface 10 may be used to gently round and remove any roughness on the top side of the filed tip edge 24 of nail 22. ..
The small curved surface 8 of the file 2 may be gently used to round and remove any roughness on the underside of the filed tip 24 of the finger.
Although the prefelTed embodiment as well as the operation and use have been specifically described, it should be understood that variations in the preferred embodirnent could easily be achieved by a man skilled in the art without departing ~om the spirit of the invention.
Claims (9)
1. In a nail file having a curved portion adapted to file the underside of a finger nail.
2. A nail file having a flat portion and a curved portion adapted to file the underside of a finger nail.
3. In a nail file having a top filing section merging with a pair of spaced apart side sections, each said side filing section tapering towards said top curved filing section so as to produce a small curved surface at one end of said nail file and a relatively larger curved surface at the other end of said nail file.
4. A nail file as claimed in claim 3 wherein said top filing section is curved and merges with a pair of spaced apart side filing sections so as to produce a curved cross section.
5. A nail file as claimed in claim 4 wherein each said side filing section is flat for filing the underside but not the sides of a human fingernail.
6. A nail file as claimed in claim 6 wherein said small curved surface is adapted to remove the roughness from the underside of a human fingernail.
7. A nail file as claimed in claim 4 wherein said larger curved section is adapted to remove any roughness on the top side of said human fingernail.
8. In a method for filing a human fingernail with a nail file having a curved top filing section merging with a pair of spaced apart flat side filing sections, each said flat side filing section tapering towards said top curved filing section so as to produce a small curved surface at one end of said nail file and a relatively larger curved surface at the other end thereof, comprising the steps of:
(a) utilizing one of said flat sides to file the underside but not the sides of said fingernail so as to produce a filed tip edge;
(b) utilizing said small curved surface to remove any roughness on the underside of the filed tip edge of said fingernail;
(c) utilize said relatively larger curved surface to remove roughness from the top side of said human fingernail.

9. In a method as claimed in claim 8 wherein said underside of said fingernail is filed as a 45° angle relative one of said flat side filing surfaces.
