Abstract

Abstract of the Disclosure The present invention provides a coupling having a first pipe on which one end an diametrically enlarged portion is formed and a second pipe of which one end can be inserted into the elongated portion of the first pipe. As a result, a total length of both the pipes can be regulated within the range of an axial length of the enlarged portion of the first pipe.

Description

8~

The present invention relates to couplings for pipe including tube, hose and the like and more particularly to couplings capable of the correct positioning of an outlet of a pipe to be connected.
Sprinklers are used in a fire prevention equipment and attached to an outlet of a pipe which may be connec-ted through couplings to a water pipe or another pipe. The position of the spri~nklers as used in the fire prevention equipment is very important because a maximum distance betwen adjacent sprinklers determines an efficiency of the fire fighting.
As will be seen below, dimensioning the various components of pipes and hoses can be relatively difficult. This is because of the parti-cular elements which are available for forming a comple-te arrangement.
Thus, it is an object of the present invention to overcome these disadvantages in a prior art by providing a coupling for pipe according to the present invention. The present invention will be accomplished by a coupling for pipes comprising a first pipe having at one end thereof a diametrically enlarged portion, a second pipe to be connected to -the first pipe and inserted into the enlarged portion of the first pipe, a body having a bore for receiving the enlarged portion of the firs-t pipe and an out-wardly -tapered end in abutment relation with a flared end of the first pipe, the body being provided with an externally threaded portion, an annular packinc~
disposed between the flared end of the first pipe and the outer surface of -the second pipe, a washer for lB ~

engagement with the packing, a lock ring having an inclined outer surface and disposed around the second pipe, and a nut having an internally threaded portion and a tapered bore to conform approximately to the inclined outer surface of the lock ring, the engage-ment of the threaded portions of the nut and the body enabling to press the lock ring and the packing into locking and sealing engagement with the~second pipe, the enlarged portion of the first pipe having an axial length adapted to receive a sufficient length of the second pipe so as to be able to regula-te a whole length of the second pipe relative to the first pipe.
Another aspect of the present invention provides -the second pipe having at i-ts end an out-wardly projected annular flange of an outer diameter more than an inner diameter of the packing. Further aspect of the present invention provides the lock ring having at its inner surface teeth adapted to bite into the pipe wall.
The present invention is further accom-plished by a coupling for pipe comprising a first pipe having at one end thereof a diametrically enlarged portion and at the other end thereof a sprinkler, a second pipe to be connected to the firs-t pipe, the end of the second pipe being inserted into the enlarged portion of the first pipe and the other end of the second pipe being connected to a fitting of a water pipe, a body having a bore for receiving the enlarged portion of the first pipe and an out-wardly tapered end in abu-tment relation with a flared end of the first pipe, the body being provided with an externally threaded portion, an annular packing disposed between the flared end of the first pipe and the outer surface of the second pipe, a washer for S engagement with the packing, a lock ring having an inclined outer surface and disposed around the second pipe, and a nut having an internally threaded portion and a tapered bore to conform approximately to the inclined outer surface of the lock ring, the engage-ment of the threaded portions of the nut and the body enabling to press the lock ring and the packing into locking and sealing engagement with the second pipe, the enlarged portion of the first pipe having an axial length adapted to receive a sufficient length of the second pipe so as to be able to regulate a whole length of the second pipe relative to the first pipe.
The nature, objects and other advantages of the present inveAtion will be understood from the following descriptions and the accompanying drawings in which -the preferred embodiments of the present invention have been illustrated. In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side view showing a con-ventional pi.peline using couplings for pipes, Fig. 2 is a side view partly in longi-tudinal section of a coupling according to the present i.nvention, Fig. 3 is a side view partly in longi-tudinal section o:~ a first and second pipes according to another embodiment of the present invention, ~2~4136 Fig. 4 is a side section o~ a half part of a coupling according to the other embodiment of the present invention, E`ig. 5 is a side section similar to Fig. 4, but the second pipe is drawn with respect to the first pipe, Fig. 6 is a side view showing a pipeline according to the present invention, and Fig. 7 is a part of section of further embodiment according to the present invention.
Referring to Fig. 1, a conventional pipe-line is illustrated wherein a sprinkler (1) is con-nected to a first pipe (2) leading to a water pipe (3) through couplings (4) and a second pipe (5). The position of the sprinker (1) with respec-t to the water pipe (3) or a wall of housing will depend on the dimensions of Ll and L2. In order to obtain accura-te dimensions of Ll and L2, the cutting of the first and second pipes (2,5) is requested at a limited place such as in the wall or in the ceiling after once the pipeline as shown in Fig. 1 is set and it is recognized -that the dimensions of Ll and L2 do not comply with a design drawing. This work is hard and not easy. Further, there is a disadvan-tage that an amount of the engagemen-t or lockiny be-tween the pipe (2 or 5) and coupling (4) is reduced when the pipe 2 or 5 is cut short, so that the withdrawal of the pipe 2 or 5 Erom the coupling (4) is not pre vented or a fLuid tight connection is not assured.
Referring to Fig. 2, a coupling for pipes (6) incLudes a first pipe (7) having a-t i-ts one end a diametrically enlarged portion (8) of an inner diameter (D) and an axial length (,~), and a second pipe (9) of an outer diameter (dl) which is somewhat less -than the inner diameter (D) of the first pipe (7) so as to receive one end of the second pipe (9) within the enlarged portion (8) of the first pipe (7). The axial length (~ ) of the enlarged por-tion (8) of the first pipe (7) is enough to receive a sufficient length of the second pipe (9) so as to be able to regulate a whole length of the second pipe (9) with respect -to the first pipe (7) by taking in and out the former into the enlarged portion (8) of the first pipe (7). It is noted that the first pipe (7) is provided at its one end with a flared end ( 1 0 ) .
The coupling (6) further includes a body (11) having an externally threaded portion (12) formed on the outer surface thereof. The wrench section is indica-ted by (13). The body (11) has a bore (14) for receiving the first pipe (7) and an outwardly tapered end (15) on one end of the bore (14) which is in abutment relation with the flared end (10) of the first pipe (7). A packing (16) made of a resilient or suitable material i.s disposed around the second pipe (9) and be-tween the flared end (10) of the first pipe (7) and an outer surface .Z~ 86 of the second pipe (9). A washer (17) and a lock ring (18) with a gap axially cut out of which end surfaces are opposed are disposed around the second pipe (9), but the washer (17) is placed between the packing (16) and the lock ring (18).
The lock ring (18) made of a steel has an inclined outer peripheral surface (19) and teeth (20) formed on the inner surface of the lock ring (18).
The coupling further includes a nut (21) having an internally threaded portion (22) which is engageabls with the externally threaded portion (12) of the body (11). The nut (21) has a tapered bore (23) to confirm approximately to the inclined outer surface (19) of the lock ring (18).
When the coupling (6) is mounted as shown in Fig. l and the nut (21) is screwed into the body (ll), the diameter of the lock ring is reduced due to the gap thereof and the lock ring (18) and the packing (16) are pressed into locking and sealing engagement with the second pipe (9) and the flared end (10) of the first pipe (7) is,forced to the body (11), so that a rigid connection of both the pipes (7,9) i8 eætablished.
The teeth (20) of the lock ring (18) will bite into the second pipe (9) when the nut (21) is screwed into the body (11) to prevent the withdrawal of the second pipe (9) from the first pipe (7).
It should be noted that the end of the second pipe (9) can be taken in or out the enlarged portion ~8) of the first pipe (7) within a range of dimensions (~) so that a whole ~z~

length of the second pipe (9) with respect to the first plpe (7) is easily regulated.
Refer to Fig~ 3, another embodiment of the present invention is illustrated wherein corresponding or like parts are designated by the same reference numerals as used in Fig. 2. In this embodiment, the qecond pipe (g') is provided at one end with an outwardly projected annular flange (24) having an outer diameter more than inner diameters of the packing (16) and the washer (17), and the bore of the lock ring tl8') is formed without teeth (20). The second pipe (9) is further provided at its another end with the projection or rib (25) against which a nut (26) is abutted. The nut (26) is screwed into a conventional nipple (27), and a gasket (28) and a washer (29) are disposed around the second pipe (9).
When the nut (26) is screwed into the nipple (27), the packing (28) is pressed into the second pipe (9), and the washer (29) and the a part of the nut are forced on the projection (25), so that withdrawal of the second pipe (9) from the nipple (27) is prevented and a seal between the nipple (27) and the second pipe (9) i9 assured. The externally threaded portion (30) of the nipple (27) is made use of a connection of the same to a fitting of a water pipe line.
An embodiment of Fig. 4 uses a second pipe (9) having a pro~ection (2~) and a lock ring (18) having teeth (20) formed on the bore thereof.
When the second pipe (9) is inadvertently drawn or 9~8~

taken out with respect to the first pipe (7) the pro~ection ~2~) of the second pipe (9) is useful in preventing khe second pipe (9) from slipping off the first pipe (7) because the projection (24) is caught b~ the washer (17) and the packing (16).
Fig. 6 shows an example of a pipeline making of use of the present invention wherein the nipple (27) on ~he S-shaped second pipe (9) is screwed into a fitting (31) of a water pipe (32). The second pipe (9) is connected to the S-shaped first pipe (7) having a sprinkler (33) in such a manner that one end of the second pipe (9) is inserted into the enlarged portion (8) of the first pipe (l). As a result, when the nut (21) is loosened, the first pipe (7) can be moved with respect to the second pipe (9) within the range of the dimension (~) and the sprinkler (33) can be placed at the requested position (Ll) without the cutting of the pipes (7,9). In order to ad~ust the dimension L2, the first pipe (7) i8 turned with respect to the second pipe (9) or both the pipes (7,9) are rotated about a standard line (34).
Fig. 7 shows another embodiment of the present invention including a lock ring (18") which comprises an anchor ring (35) and a retainer (36). Like parts as used in Figs. 2,3 and 4 are designated by the same reference numerals in Fig. 7 and the descrlption thereof ls omitted. The anchor ring (35) is of an inner diameter less than the outer diameter of the second pipe (9) so that the outer diameter of the anchor ring (35) 1~ 6 is decreased when mounted on the second pipe (9). On the other hand, the retainer (36) with a gap axially extending has an tapered inner surface ~37). Thus, when the nut (21) is screwed into the body (11), the washer (17) pushes the anchor ring (35) into a limited space between the inner surface (37) of the retainer (36) and the outer surface of the second ring (9) so that the anchor ring (35) bites in the second ring (9) and withdrawal of the second ring (9) is prevented. The adjustment of the length of the second ring (9) with respect to the first ring (7) is accomplished in the same manner as that of the previously mentioned embodiment.
~ s many apparently widely different embodiments of the present invention can be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific embodiments thereof except as defined in the appended claims.
