Description
~X~34589 The inventlon relates to apparatus for cooking food, which food is intended, in partlcular~ for being eaten with bread.
Apparatuses of this type already exist suitable for cooking food, or for reheating or keeping warm food which has already been cooked, and such apparatuses may be used by shop-keepers on premises where the food is sold, or else directly by consumers at home, etc. When the food is for eating with bread, and in particular when the food is constituted by sausages, it is already known to force pieces of bread onto a spit in order to form a food-receiving recess, thereby avoiding the need to split the piece of bread lengthwise in order to insert the food.
However, the use of such prior apparatuses unavoidably requires the food to be manipulated several times using cooking utensils, and the cooked food must then be inserted into the pieces of bread, which can sometimes be awkward to do.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the above mentioned disadvantages.
Accordingly, the present invention provides apparatus for cooking food intended for being eaten with bread, the apparatus comprising a grill having two hotplates between which the food to be cooked is placed, with one of said plates calrying hot spits onto which pieces of bread are spitted in order to be heated and to be shaped with respective food-shaped hollows.
Apparatus ln accordance with the invention thus makes it possible to simultaneously cook the food to be eaten and to heat the pieces of bread by hot-forming hollows therein, said hollows having the same shape as the food they are to receive, and retaining said shape, thereby making it easy to put the cooked food into the pieces of bread.
Advantageously, the food to be cooked is in the form of slabs of minced meat, fish, etc., with each slab being spitted . ~
1~4589 with a stick for the purpose of manipulating the slab during cooking and for insertin~ it into a piece of bread.
In a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, one of the grill hotplates is pivotally mounted on the other, and is capable of pivoting between a lower, horizontal position in which it covers the other hotplate and the food to be cooked, and a raised position enabling the food to be cooked to be placed on the grill and to be removed therefrom, the spits for heating and shaping the pieces of bread being mounted on the outside face of the pivoting hotplate. The spits are heated by thermal conduction from the hotplates on whlch they are mounted.
Advantageously, the fixed and horizontal cooking face of the other hotplate includes compa~ ents having the same shape as the items of food to be cooked. In addition this cooking face may also include grooves for collecting cooking juices and fats, which grooves are connected via ducts passing through the plate to a recovery drawer situated beneath the plate.
This prevents cookin~ juices and fats from being completely burnt during cooking which would give rise to disagreeable smells and smoke. In addition, since the food to be cooked is placed inside compartments between the two hotplates, it is cooked very quickly and produces practically no smoke. The apparatus is designed to cook deep-frozen food directly, but may also be used to cook fresh food.
Embodiments of the invention are described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of apparatus in accordance with the invention shown in its open position;
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the bottom portion of apparatus in accordance with the invention;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the apparatus showing how it is used;
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing how a cooked slab is inserted into a piece of bread; and ,. , Figu~es SA, 5B, and 5C relate to a variant embodLment of the inventlon suitable for cooking fo~d which ls gen~rally cylindrical in shape.
Reference is made initially to Figures 1 to 3 which relate to a first embodiment of apparatus in accordance with the invention.
The apparatus comprises a base or frame 10 which may be made of stainless steel sheet, for example, and which supports an electric grill comprising two hotplates 12 and 14, with the bottom plate 14 being mounted in a fixed horizontal position on the base 10 and with the top plate 12 being pivoted about a horizontal axis by means of hi~ges 16 disposed along one of the long sides of the bottom plate 14. Thus, the top plate 12 may be raised as shown in Figure 1, or lcwered to a horizontal position in which it substantially covers the bottom plate 14.
Parallel vertical partitions 18 are provided on the ccoking face of the bottom plate 14 and extend transversely across the plate. The partitions 18 define compartments having substantially the same shape and size as the items of food to be cooked.
A plurality of such compartments may be provided on the bottom plate 14, for example there may be four such compartments as shown in Figure 1, together with a compartment of laryer size for cooking larger-size items of food.
As can best be seen in Figure 2, the cooking face of the bottom plate 14 includes grooves 20 for collscting cooking juices and fats, and these grooves are connected via vertical ducts 22 which pass through the plate 14 to a drawer 24 for recovering cooking ~uices and melted fat, with the drawer 24 bsing received in the base 10 beneath the plate 14.
The top hotplate 12 which is pivoted to the bottom plate 14 has a bottom cooking face which may either be plane, or else it may be shaped to match the shapes of the food items to be cooked. The outer or top face of the top hotplate 12 has a plurality of spits 26 projecting perpendicularly therefrom and terminated by pointed ends 28, with the spits 26 being of 4~ri89 substantially the same shape as the food items for insertion into pieces of bread.
The hotplates 12 and 14 may be made of cast iron, for example, with electrical heater elements passing therethrough, inside the plates and not visible in the drawings. The heater elements are supplied with electricity from a control circuit mounted on the base 10 and including, for example, an overall ON/OFF switch 30, a thermostat 32 for regulating the temperature of plates 12 and 14, and a timer 34. ~he spits 26 may be made of aluminum, for example, and they are heated by conduction from the top plate 12 on which they are mounted.
The pivoting top plate 12 and the drawer 24 are provided with handles to enable them to be manipulated. These handles may be of the shapes shown in Figure 1, and referenced 13 and 15 respectively.
This apparatus is used as follows.
The ON/OFF switch 30 is switched ON in order to apply electricity to the heater elements of the hotplates 12 and 14, and then after a pre-heat pause, the plate 12 is raised and items of food to be cooked are placed in the compartments on the cooking face of the bottom plate 14. The plate 12 is then lowered onto the plate 14. In this position, the large outside faces of the food items to be cooked are in contact with the cooking faces of the hotplates 12 and 14, and optionally the small faces may also be in contact with the partitions 18 which delimit the compartments. Cooking juices and fats are collected in the grooves 20 in the cooking face of the bottom plate 14 and flow via the ducts 22 into the recovery drawer 24. The drawer may initially contain a ~antity of water suitable for preventing the cooking ~uices and fats from giving rise to unpleasant smells.
When the plate 12 is lowered onto the plate 14 in order to cook food, pieces of bread 36 are spitted onto the spits 26 which heat the pieces of bread and which form recesses therein suitable for receiving items of cooked food.
Once the food is cooked, the plate 12 is raised, a cooked food item is removed from its compartment on the bottom plate 1~4589 14, a piece of bread 36 is removed from a spit 26, and the cooked food item is inserted into the recess formed in the piece of bread by the spit 26.
Figure 3 shows a generally rectangular slab of minced meat or fish as it appears after being cooked when the top plate 12 is raised. A stick or small rod of wood 40 is spitted into the slab in order to facilitate manipulation thereof. The piece of bread 36 is removed from the spit 26 which has heated the bread and has formed a cavity in the bread of substantially the same shape and size as the slab 38 which is readily inserted into the cavity.
Once the cooked item has been inserted into the piece of bread (see Figure 4) the stick may either be left in place, or else it may be removed.
When the food items are of a different shape, for example when they are cylindrical as shown at 42 in Figure 5B, the spits 26' mounted on the plate 14 are also cylindrical in shape, as shown in Figure 5A, SD as to form cylindrical recesses 44 inside pieces of bread 36 (see Figure 5C).
Apparatus in accordance with the invention takes few minutes to prepare and serve hot food which is cooked, but not reheated. The food is served in hot bread, without being manipulated and without using cooking utensils.
The apparatus may be used to cook fresh food, and also to cook deep-frozen food without requiring it to be unfrozen before cooking. The food is ccoked without disagreeable smoke and smells being generated.
