Abstract
ABSTRACT
A folding cot-chair with a reversible back rest and sun shade capable of being folded into a compact bundle for storage or transportation. The pivotal connections permit facile erection and folding of the assembly and the back rest connectors permit detaching and reversal of the back rest for use of the assembly as a chair, cot or chaise lounge. A sun shade may be pivotally mounted on the back rest or on the cot-chair.

Description
~Z3~7C)6 This invention relates to a folding cot-chair and, more particularly, relates to a folding cot-chair having a reversible back rest and sun shade capable of being folded into a compact bundle.
United States Patent 2591551 discloses a cot having side rails and end rails hinged at their respective centres to permit folding of the cot into a bundle. The folding end rails, each comprising two coaxial sections hinged together at their adjacent ends and having means connecting the opposite ends of the end rails to side rails for multiple movement about three different axes for collapse of the cot,~render the cot structure difficult to fold, or unfold, while making the assemblage bulky when collapsed.
The present invention is directed to a folding cot-chair which can be used as a cot and/or as a chair or chaise lounge having a sturdy construction when assembled and forming a compact bundle for portability and storage when folded.
The folding cot-chair of my invention comprlses, in its broad aspect, a pair of side rails, each side rail formed of two axially aligned tubular members centrally hinged together and adapted to be collapsed into a folded position and extended to the axially aligned position, a plurality of pairs of crossed legs pivotally secured to said side rails, means for pivotally securing the legs of each pair to each other at about the centre of the said legs, said means for pivotally securing each pair of legs to each other comprising a generally x-shaped pivotal fitting having sockets formed at the distal ends of the fitting for receiving a portion of the legs whereby each leg is ~23~:)7(~
laterally axially offset at the fitting to permit each pair of legs to be pivoted to a folded position such that the legs are disposed parallel to each other, and a body supporting sheet of flexible material secured to the side rails.
A back rest comprises a pair of laterally spaced-apart side rails each pivotally connected to a connector bar having means for removably securing said connector bar to the side rails of the cot-chair. A sun shade pivotally mounted above the upper end of the back rest can be adjusted to provide shade for the user of the unit. The sun shade can be attached directly to the cot-chair. The back rest can be reversed to provide either a chair or a chaise lounge.
The invention will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the chair-cot of the invention in an operative position as a chaise lounge;
Figure 2 is a perspective view illustrating the under side of the cot portion of the invention;
Figure 3 is an end view of the cot portion of the invention in its opened, operative position;
Figure 4 is an end view corresponcling to Figure 3 having t.he side rails and legs pivoted together;
Figure 5 is a side elevation, partly cut away, showing the pairs of legs prior to folding;
Figure 6 is a side elevation corresponding to Figure 5 showing on~ pair of legs folded inwardly against the side rails;
Figure 7 is a side elevation showing the cot frame in its fully folded position; and ~30~
Figure 8 is a perspective view showing in detail a back rest connector having the two components separated.
The cot portion of the cot-chair assembly comprises a main frame having a pair of side rails 10, 12 with at least two pairs, and preferably three pairs, of spaced-apart crossed legs depicted by numerals 14, 16 and 18 pivotally connected to side rails 10, 12 by means of pivotal connectors 20 and a centre hinge connector 21. Connectors 20 comprise a metal strip forming two side plates 23 pivotally secured to rails 10, 12 by rivets or bolts 22 and a wrap-around bignt 25 rigidly secured to the upper ends 17 of the cot legs by rivets 27 to enable each pair of legs 14, 18 to be pivoted inwardly upwardly against the side rails as indicated most clearly in Figure 5 and 6.
The central portion of each pair of legs 14, 16 and 18 includes an x-shaped connector 24 for pivotally connecting the leg portions 17, 19 of each pair together, as shown most clearly in Figures 3 and 4. Each pivotal connector 24 comprises two pairs 26, 28 of spaced-apart sockets 30, 32 laterally axially offset from each other by a central web 34, the webs 34 pivotally secured together by a bolt or rivet 36 with a bushing 35, preferably formed of nylon, inserted between webs 34. Figure 3 illustrates the legs in their open, operative position, with the arrows indicating the relative direction of pivotal movement of the legs for collapse into the closed position shown in Figure 4.
The maximum opening of each pair of legs 14, 16 or 18 is limited by the width of flexible sheet 36, such as canvas or 3.
~307(~6 flexibLe plastic, secured to side rails 10, 12 by lacing, as shown most clearly in Figure 2, which joins opposed flaps 38, 40 at the underside of the cot. Appropriate cut-out 42, Figure 1, are located at the several pivot points and connections along the frame.
Each of side rails 10, 12 preferably is formed of two sections 44, 46 normally arranged in end-to-end coaxial alignment in the operative position of the cot, Figure 6, and pivotally connected at their adjacent extremities by the pair of connectors 21 for folding, Figure 7. Each of connectors 21 comprises a central bight portion 52 wrapped around an adjacent end of side rail components 44, 46 and secured thereto by rivets 54 with the arcuate ends 56, 58 overlapping each other for securement to an end 17 of the legs of pair 16 by a rivet or bolt 60.
With reference now to Figure 5, the frame of the chair-cot is shown in its open position with the pairs of legs 14, 16 and 18 disposed substantially perpendicular to side rails 10, 12. The end pairs of legs 14, 18 are pivoted inwardly upwardly, in the directions of the arrows, against the side rails 10, 12, as shown in Figure 6 and the side rail components 44, 46 pivoted about connectors 21 on pair oE legs 16 to the folded position shown in Figure 7.
With reference now to Figures 1 and 8, a back rest 70 comprising a pair of side rails 72, 74 having a sheet of flexible material 76 secured thereto by a conventional hem are pivotally secured to connector members 78, 80 by pivot pins such as bolts 82. Back rest 70 defines an acute angle with connector members 78, 80 and is secured thereto by means of brace 84 pivotally mounted on connector 78 and removably ~3~)706 secured to side rails 72, 74 by means of bolts 88 passing through side rails 72, 74.
Each of connector members 78, 80 has a pair of spaced-apart connectors 90 secured thereto by a rivet inserted through hole 91, each connector 90 having a central downwardly depending finger 92 straddled by a pair of laterally offset fingers 94, 96 adapted to be inserted into a receptacle 98 secured by rivets 99 to the outer side of side rail component 44. Receptacle 98 comprises a plate 100 with a connector 101 identical to connector 90 secured thereto such that central finger 102 and laterally spaced offset fingers 104, 106 are upwardly directed to frictionally receive the downwardly directed mating fingers of connector 90.
A sun shade 110 having side rails 112, 114, with a flexible fabric 116 stretched therebetween by means of transverse rod 118 secured at its opposite ends to side rails 112, 114 by means of wing nut-bolts 120, 122 is adjustably secured to the upper ends of side rails 72, 74 of back rest 70 by means of a pair of double links 124, 126 secured thereto by wing nut-bolts 128, 130 and 132. Sun shade 116 thus can be readily positioned as desired over the cot to shield the user.
Frame and leg components preferably are forrned of extruded aluminium tubing and connectors, linkage and the like formed of aluminium rod or sheet.
The assembly is light in weight and can be folded into a compact bundle 36 inches long with a 6 inch diameter.
It will be understood that modifications can be made in the embodiment of the invention illustrated and described herein without departing from the scope and purview of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
