Abstract

ABSTRACT
The invention is concerned with a disposable diaper having a moisture pervious topsheet adapted to contact the body of an infant, a moisture impervious backsheet substantially coextensive with the topsheet, an absorbent core interposed between the topsheet and the backsheet, and adhesive tab fastener means for releasably fastening together opposed portions of the diaper. The tab fastener means comprise a fastening tape and a reinforcing tape each having an adhesive surface and a non-adhesive surface, the adhesive surface of the fastening tape having one end adhered to the backsheet of one of the opposed portions of the diaper and a portion adhered to the non-adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape, and a release tape adhered to the adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape so as to permit the reinforcing tape and release tape to be separated from one another to thereby expose the adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape for adhesion to the backsheet of the other portion of the diaper. The reinforcing tape is provided with a color which is readily discri-minable from base colors of the backsheet and the fastening tape. Each of said fastening tape and rein-forcing tape has a free end terminating in a folded over grip tab with the grip tab of the reinforcing tape extending beyond the grip tab of the fastening tape by at least 5 mm. The adhesive force with which the adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape adheres to the backsheet is not greater than the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface of the fastening tape adheres to the non-adhesive surface of the rein-forcing tape.

Description

Background of the invention:
The present invention relates to a dispo-sable diaper having improved tab fastener means by which the front portion and the rear portion of the diaper may be fastened to each other at each pair of corres-ponding waistline ends of both these portions.
There have already been used in practice several kinds of disposable diaper which need no diaper cover. Such diaper essentially comprises a moisture pervious topsheet to be in contact with the wearer t S skin during use, a moisture impervious back-sheet to be out of contact with the wearer's skin during use, and an absorptive core interposed between these two sheets. In typical one of such disposable diaper, the moisture pervious topsheet is made of nonwoven fabric or the like, the moisture impervious backsheet is made of synthetic resin film or the like, and the absorptive core is made of cellulosic fluff or the like.
Any one of the front portion and the rear portion of such diaper is provided at each waistline end with the tape fastening system to fasten this waistline end to the 1 corresponding waistline end of the other portion. The tape
2 fastening system includes a pressure sensitive fastening
3 tape which is usually secured a-t one end to the backsheet
4 at each waistline end of the diaper's front or rear portion.
In use, a Eree end of the fastening tape is adhered to the 6 backsheet at each waistline end of the other portion and 7 thereby the front portion and the rear portion of the diaper 8 are fastened to each other at each pair of corresponding g waistline ends of these two portions. Accordingly, relatively strong adhesive is usually used as the adhesive 11 for the fastening tape to prevent said free end from being 12 released from the backsheet during use.
13 As material for the backsheet of diaper, on the 14 contrary, extremely thin film of synthetic resin such as polyethylene is usually used to meet the requirements such 16 as softness and manufacturing economy. In consequence, 17 when the free end of the fastening tape which was adhered 18 to the backsheet of diaper as previously mentioned is peeled 19 off from said backsheet, the tensile force for peeling off may cause a partial breakage of the backsheet due to a high 21 adhesive force of said free endO Such breakage makes reuse 22 of the fastening tape and therefore, readhesion of said 23 free end impossible. This means that the diaper is no 24 longer useful. Even if no breakage occurs when the fastening tape is peeled off from the backsheet, it is
5~

1 inevitable that the backsheet is partially stretched until 2 the portion in question becomes unacceptably thin and its 3 strength is substantial.ly reduced, so that, after the free 4 end of the fastening tape has been adhered to the backsheet at said por-tion, even a slight tensile force acting on the
6 diaper may readily break said portion and, as a result,
7 detach said free end from the backsheet. The tape fastening
8 system of prior art has been uneconomical and inconvenient g since peeling off of the free end of the fastening tape from the backsheet of diaper almost unexceptionally causes 11 said breakage and makes readhesion impossible. In conse-12 quence, the person, for example, the mother often finds 13 difficulty when she tries to fit the loosened diaper again 14 to her baby's body after she has peeled off the free end of the fastening tape to examine the presence of her baby's l excrements inside the diaper.
17 Certainly there have been proposed countermeasures 18 for the drawbacks as mentioned above and one of these 19 countermeasures is disclosed in Japanese Utility Model Laid--Open Application No. 55-75&08. According to the 21 disclosure of this prior invention, a non-adhesive surface 22 of the reinforcing tape is adhered to an adhesive surface 23 of the fastening tape extending along its free end, the 24 free end of the fastening tape is adhered, in turn, to the backsheet of diaper with interposition of an adhesive 1 surface of the reinforcing tape, the free end of the 2 fastening tape is peeled off from the backsheet of diaper 3 with the reinforcing tape remaining adhered -to said backsheet of diaper, and further adhesion/peeling off of said free end to and from said backsheet are always done 6 with interposition of -the reinforcing tape. However, it 7 has been found that this prior invention involves problems 8 which had not been easily found by the inventors of the
9 prior invention and the present invention - it is a surprise for the inventors - and will be described below.
11 Specifically, the prior invention proposes an 12 arrangement such that an adhesive force per unit area with 13 which the adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape adheres 14 to the backsheet of diaper is higher than an adhesive force with which the adhesive surface of the fastening tape 16 extending along its free end adheres to the non adhesive 17 surface of the reinforcing tape to prevent the reinforcing 18 tape from being peeled off from the backsheet of diaper 19 together with the free end of the fastening tape when said free end of the fastening tape is peeled off from said 21 reinforcing tape previously adhered to said backsheet of 22 diaper. However, such arrangement has problems as 23 following.
2~ Firstly, according to this prior invention, it is necessary to provide a sufficient difference between l the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface of the 2 fastening tape extending along its free end adheres to the 3 non-adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape and the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape adheres to the backsheet of diaper and 6 such requirement restricts a range of choice for materials 7 of the backsheet of diaper, adhesive used, and the rein 8 forcing tape,-on one side, and complicates the procedures g of quantity control.
Secondly, also in this prior invention, it is 11 necessary that the adhesive force with which the adhesive 12 surface of the fastening tape extending along its free end 13 adheres to the non-adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape 14 should be substantially in the same order as such the adhesive force required by the diaper of prior art in which 16 the adhesive surface of the fastening tape extending along 17 its free end adheres directly to the backsheet of diaper, l so that, according to .this prior invention,- the adhesive 19 force with which the adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape adheres to the backsheet of diaper is necessarily 21 higher than said adhesive force of prior art. In this case, 22 however, there are arisen troubleSthat an excessive adhesive 23 force between the adhesive surface and the non-adhesive 24 surface of the reinforcing tape prevents the reinforcing tape from being smoothly delivered from its supply roll 1 in the course of assembling the desired tape fastening 2 system. It may be said in this connection that the 3 reinforcing tape and the fastening tape are continuously 4 and circinately rolled, and delivered from their supply rolls and cut with a necessary length when the tape 6 fastening system is assembled by them. According to the 7 prior invention, when said adhesive force is weakened to 8 avoid the trouble as mentionèd just above, the adhesive g force with which the adhesive surface of the fastening tape extending along its free end adheres to the non-adhesive 11 surface of the reinforcing tape will be necessarily lower 12 than said adhesive force, resulting in that the fastening 13 effect at each waistline end of the diaper could no longer 14 sufficiently be maintained and this fastening effect might be lost during use of the diaper.
16 Thirdly, the user often finds a more or less 17 stretching in the backsheet of diaper adjacent each 1B waistline end due to a.tensile. force genera-ted in this area 19 when the user tries to refasten the diaper which has been loosen at said area. According to the prior invention, 21 said stretching, no matter how its degree is, will cause 22 the free end tip of the fastening tape to project beyond ~3 the corresponding end of the reinforcing tape by a length 24 corresponding to the degree of said stretching and this projecting free end tip adheres directly to the backsheet of diaper This sometimes results in breakage of the backsheet, reduction of the latter's strength, and particularly results in that, as will be described later in detail, the reinforcing tape adhered to the backsheet is sometimes unintentionally peeled off from the latter when the free end of the fastening tape is peeled off from the backsheet of diaper.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a disposable diaper having improved tab fas-tener means which enables one to overcome the abovementioned problems encountered with the prior art.
In accordance with the invention, there is thus provided in a disposable diaper having a moisture pervious topsheet adapted to contact the body of an infant, a moisture impervious backsheet substantially coextensive with the topsheet, an absorbent core interposed between the topsheet and the backsheet, and adhesive tab fastener means for releasably fas-tening together opposed portions of the diaper, the improvement wherein the tab fastener means comprise a fastening tape and a reinforcing tape each having an adhesive surface and a non-adhesive surface, the adhe-sive surface of the fastening tape having one end adhered to the backsheet of one of the opposed portions of -the diaper and a portion adhered to the non-adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape, and a release tape adhered to the adhesive surface of the reinforcirlg so tape so as to permit the reinforcing tape and release tape to be separated from one another to thereby expose the adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape for adhesion to the backsheet of the other portion of the diaper. The reinforcing tape is provided with a color which is readily discriminable from base colors of the backsheet and the fastening tape. Each of the fastening tape and reinforcing tape has a free end terminating in a folded over grip tab with the grip tab of the reinforcing tape extending beyond the grip tab of the fastening tape by at least 5 mm. The adhesive force with which the adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape adheres to the backsheet is not grea-ter than the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface of the fastening tape adheres to the non-adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape.

22 Detailed description of the invention:
23 The present invention will be better understood 24 from the following description taken in reference with the accompanying drawing which shows preferred embodiments.

1 Referring to Fig. 1 which is a perspective view 2 showing a disposable diaper, as seen from its front, 3 together with a -tape fastening system according to the 4 present invention applied thereto, the diaper 1 comprises a cro-tch portion 2, a front portion 3 and a rear portion 6 4, wherein said front portion 3 is fastened at each 7 waistline end 5 by the tape fastening system 7 to said rear 8 portion 4 at each waistline end 6 thereof. Although the g present invention i5 regardless, as a rule, of the con-struction of the diaper 1 itself, the latter is assumed 11 here to have a construction same as the conventional one, 12 i.e., to comprise a moisture pervious topsheet to be in 13 contact with wearer's skin in use, a moisture impervious 14 backsheet to be out of contact with wearer's skin and an absorptive core interposed between these two sheets. The 16 respective components are made of various materials, e.g., 17 nonwoven fabric for the moisture pervious topsheet, 18 synthetic resin film for the moisture impervious backsheet 19 and cellulosic fluff for the absorptive core.
Figs. 2 and 3 show, in section, the tape fastening 21 system 7 applied to the rear portion 4 of the diaper 1 at 22 each waistline end 6 thereof and as in the state beEore 23 use. Reference numeral 8 designates the topsheet and 9 24 the backsheet. The topsheet 8 and the backsheet 9 are jointed to each other along their outer peripheries by means to 1 oE adhesive, welding or~like. Though not shown in Fig.
2 2, said absorptive core is sometimes interposed between 3 the topsheet 8 and the backsheet 9 also in vicinity of said 4 outer peripheries. The tape fastening system 7 comprises a fastening tape 10, a reinforcing tape 11 and a release 6 tape 12. The fastening tape 10 is made of material having 7 relatively high tensile strength, for example, papery 8 material as conventionally used and includes an adhesive g surface 1Oa, an attachment portion 13, a free end 14 and a non-adhesive grip tab 15 having a folded tip. The re-11 inforcing tape 11 i5 made of a sheet comprising synthetic thy 12 resin film, kraft paper or~like which is surface-treated 13 with suitable releasing agent, if desired, and presents 14 an adhesive affinity. This reinforcing tape 11 is sub-stantially coextensive with the fastening tape 10 in the 16 transverse direction and, when said reinforcing tape is 17 superposed on the free end 14 of the fastening tape 10 as 18 will be described later more in detail, the-non-adhesive 19 grip tab 16 of said reinforcing tape 11 projects beyond the non-adhesive grip tab 15 of said free end by 5 mm or 21 longer. The release tape 12 has previously been surface-22 treated with releasing agent as that of prior art and is 23 dimensioned to cover the adhesive surface 11a of the 24 reinforcing tape 11 completely.
In the embodiment shown by Fig. 2, the release
10 -1 tape 12 is secured to the topsheet 8, the reinforcing tape 2 11 is adhered on the adhesive surface 1la to the upper 3 surface of said release tape 12, the attachment portion 4 13 of the fastening tape 10 is secured to the backsheet 9, and the free end 14 of said fastening tape 10 is folded 6 inwards with the adhesive surface 1Oa thereof being adhered 7 to the non-adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape 11.
8 It should be understood in this embodiment that the release g tape ~2 may be replaced by a quantity of releasing agent applied to a spot corresponding to said release tape 12.
11 Fig. 3 shows another embodiment of the present invention
12 in which the fastening tape 10 is adhered on its adhesive
13 surface 1Oa to the backsheet 9 so that the free end 14 of
14 said fastening tape 10 projects outwards beyond each waistline end of the diaper, the reinforcing tape 11 is 16 adhered on its non-adhesive surface to the rest portion 17 of said adhesive surface 1Oa, and the release tape 12 is 18 adhered to the adhesiv,e surfac,e 11a of said reinforcing 19 tape 11. When the respective components are thus adhered to one another, the non-adhesive grip tab 16 of the rein-21 forcing tape 11 projects beyond the non-adhesive grip tab 22 15 of the free end 14 of the fastening tape 10'by a suitable 23 length, preferably by'5 mm or longer in both embodiments 24 shown by Figs. 2 and 3, since the reinforcing tape 11 is so dimensioned to be longer than the free end 14 of the ~æ~

1 fasteniny tape 10 as has already been descrlbed 2 Fig. 4 shows, in a perspective view, one of the 3 waistline ends 5 fastened by the tape Eastening system 7 of Fig. 2 or 3 to the corresponding waistline end 6 of the diaper. When the embodiment shown by Fig. 2 is used to 6 achieve such fastening effect, the reinforcing tape 11 is 7 peeled off from the release tape 12 with the nonadhesive 8 grip tab 16 being held, and then the free end 14 of the g fastening tape 10 is adhered to the backsheet 9 at the associated waistline end S with said free end 14 remaining 11 adhered to the reinforcing tape 11. When the embodiment 12 shown by Fig. 3 is used, the same procedure as with the 13 embodiment of Fig. 2 may be followed after the release tape 14 12 is peeled off from the reinforcing tape 11. To remove the diaper from the wearer's body, or to make examination 16 for the presence of excrements inside the diaper and then 17 to refasten the loosened diaper, the free end 14 of the 18 fastening tape 10 may be peeled off from the reinforcing 19 tape 11 with the non-adhesive grip tab 15 of said fastening tape 10 being finger-held.
21 Fig. 5 shows, in section similar to Eig. 2, 22 further embodiment in which the release tape 12 is scared 23 to the topsheet 8 with an end of said release tape 12 24 slightly displaced inwards relative to the corresponding edge of said topsheet 8, the reinforcing tape 11 slightly 1 shorter than the release tape 12 is adhered to upper surface 2 of said release tape 12 with an end of said reinforcing 3 tape 11 slightly displaced inwards relative to the corre-4 sponding end of said release tape 12, and the attachment end 13 of the fastening tape 10 is secured to the backsheet 6 9, with the free end 14 of said fastening tape 10 being 7 folded inwards, so as to be adhered to the reinforcing tape 8 11.
g Fig. 6 shows, in section similar to Fig. 3, still another embodiment of the present invention, in which the 11 free end 14 of the fastening tape 10 with its attachment 12 end 13 secured to the backsheet 9 extends outwards beyond the associated waistline end 6 so that the non-adhesive 14 surface of the reinforcing tape 11 may be adhered to the projecting portion of the adhesive surface 10a of said 16 fastening tape 10 and the release tape 12 may be adhered 17 to the adhesive surface 11a of said reinforcing tape 11.
18 The embodimen-ts shown by Figs. 5 and 6 are 19 substantially similar to those shown by Figs. 2 and 3, respectively, in their constructions as well as in their 21 manners of use except that the free end 14 of the fastening 22 tape 10 is substantially coextensive both in the longi-23 tudinal and the transverse directions with the reinforcing 24 tape 11 so that the adhesive surface 1Oa of sail free end 14 be substantially coextensive with the adhesive surface 1 11a of said reinforcing tape 11 while the non-adhesive grip 2 tab 16 of said reinforcing tape 11 extends beyond the non-3 adhesive grip tab 15 of said fastening tape 10 by a suitable 4 length.
In the embodiments shown by Fig. 2 to Fig. 6, 6 the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface 11a of 7 the reinforcing tape 11 adheres to the backsheet 9 is not 8 higher than the adhesive force with which the adhesive 9 surface 1Oa of the fastening tape 10 extending along the free end 14 thereof adheres to the non-adhesive surface 11 of said reinforcing tape. The expression "is not higher 12 than" means that the adhesive force with which the 13 adhesive surface 11a of the reinforcing tape 11 adheres 14 to the backsheet of the diaper is substantially equal to the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface 10a of 16 the fastening tape 10 extending along its free end 14 17 adheres to the non-adhesive surface of said reinforcing 18 tape 11 or the adhesive force of the former is rather lower 19 than the adhesive force of the latter. The term "adhesive force" should be understood here as the adhesive force per 21 unit area.
22 In the embodiments shown by Fig. 2 to Fig. 6, 23 it is preferred to provide the reinforcing tape 11 wholly 24 or partially with a color which is discriminabie from a base color of the backsheet 9 and further from the fastening .~

1 tape 10 and/or the release tape 12. Such a measure permits 2 the user to determine the position to adhere the free end 14 3 of the fastening tapelD~its use. Preferably, the reinforcing 4 tape 11 is provided at its non-adhesive grip tab 16 with said desired color, if said reinforcing tape 11 is to be 6 partially colored 7 With the tape fastening system according to the 8 present invention of which the construction and the manner g of use have been described hereinabove, the reinforcing tape 11 is not peeled off from the backsheet 9 but remains 11 adhered thereto when the free end 14 of the fastening tape 12 10 is peeled off from said reinforcing tape 11 previously 13 adhered to said backsheet 9. Even if the adhesive force 14 with which the adhesive surface 11a of the reinforcing tape 11 adheres to the backsheet 9 is not higher than the 16 adhesive force with which the adhesive surface 10a of the 17 fasteniny tape 10 extending along its free end 14 adheres 18 to the non-adhesive surface of said reinforcing tape 11, 19 said reinforcing tape 11 would not be peeled off from the backsheet 9, since the tip of said reinforcing tape 11 is 21 arranged to project beyond the corresponding zip of the 22 free end 14 of the fastening tape lO by a suitable length 23 so what, when said free end is peeled off, the tip of the 24 reinforcing tape 11 is not directly subjected to the force of said peeling off. Assumed that the free end 14 of the $~

1 fastening tape 10 is adhered with its tip aligned with or 2 projecting beyond the tip of the reinforcing tape 11 (the 3 case of the prior invention as previously mentioned), there 4 is a danger that the reinforcing tape 11 might be subjected to a tensile Eorce occurring when the free end 14 of the 6 fastening tape 10 is peeled off, said tensile force being 7 some-times so high, depending on the degree of adhesive 8 force, that said reinforcing tape also is unintentionally g peeled off from the backshee-t 9, even if the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface 11a of said reinforcing 11 tape 11 adheres to said backsheet 9 is higher than the 12 adhesive force with which the adhesive surface 1Oa of said 13 fastening tape 10 extending along its free end 14 adheres 14 to the non-adhesive surface of said reinforcing tape 11.
Accordingly, the adhesive force of the former should be ~6 substantially higher than the adhesive force of the latter, 17 in spite of drawbacks encountered by the previously 18 mentioned prior invention.
19 With the tape fastener system according to the present invention, it is unnecessary to adjust the adhesive 21 force with which the adhesive surface 11a of the reinforcing 22 tape 11 adheres to the backsheet 9 to a level higher than ~3 the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface 1Oa of 24 the fastening tape 10 extending along its free end 14 adheres to the non-adhesive surface of said reinforcing 1 tape '11, resulting in that the materials and other factors 2 Eor the bac]csheet 9, the adhesives of the adhesive surfaces 3 10a, 11a and the reinforcing tape 11 itself can be selected 4 in wide ranges, respectively, and the quality control is subs-tantially facilitated. Additionally, the adhesive force 6 with which the adhesive surface 1Oa of the fastening tape 7 10 extending along its free end 14 adheres to the non-adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape 11 may be sub-g stantially equal to or higher than the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface 11a of said reinforcing tape 11 11 adheres to the backsheet 9, according to the present 12 invention. This means that said adhesive force of the 13 former may be substantially equal to or higher than the 14 adhesive force in the diaper of well known art in which the adhesive surface 1Oa of the fastening tape 10 extending 16 along its free end 14 is directly adhered to the backsheet 17 9 and the fastening effect on each waistline end of the l diaper may be reliably maintained without the previously 19 mentioned troubles encountered by the prior invention It should be understood that, even if the adhesive force 21 presented by the adhesive surface 1Oa of the fastening tape 2~ 10 is adjusted to a higher level, an arrangement might be 23 provided to assure the fastening tape to be smoothly 24 delivered from its supply roll without hindrance due to an excessive adhesive force occurring between said adhesive 1 surface 1Oa and the non-adhesive surface of said fastening 2 tape. Obviously, it is because the fastening tape 10 may 3 be, in contrast with the reinforcing tape 11, surface-4 treated on its non-adhesive surface with suitable releasing agent to increase the releasing property thereon.
6 The arrangement that the reinforcing tape 11 has 7 its tip projecting beyond the corresponding tip of the free 8 end 14 of the fastening tape 10 by a suitable length assures 9 said reinforcing tape 11 to be adhered to the bac~sheet 9 with its tip so projecting, when the free end 14 of the 11 fastening tape 10 is adhered to the backsheet 9 with 12 interposition of the reinforcing tape 11. Accordingly, 13 when, for example, it is desired to fit the loosened diaper 14 again securely to the wearer's body, the tip of the free end 14 would not project beyond the corresponding tip of 16 the reinforcing tape, even if the tensile force generated 17 at each waistline end 5, 6 of the diaper thus fitted to 18 the wearerls body causes a slight extension~of the backsheet 19 9, and the inconveniences due to said projection as occurring in the case of the previously mentioned prior 21 invention might be avoided.
