Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A method of producing a sol of an element selected from the group con-sisting of aluminum, antimony, chromium, manganese, molybdenum, tin and tungstencomprising electrodialytically transferring alkali metal cations of an aqueous solution of a water soluble alkali metal salt of the oxide of the said element from an anodecompartment of an electrolytic cell to a cathode compartment of the electrolytic cell while essentially preventing the migration of the metal oxide into the cathode compartment by positioning a cation permselective membrane between the anode compartment and the cathode compartment while carefully and continuously controlling the pH of the solution and removing the so-produced sol from the anode compartment of the electrolytic cell as well as a novel electrodialytic cell for sol formation.

Claims (11)
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:"
1. A process for producing a sol of an element selected from the group consisting of aluminum, antimony, chromium, manganese, molybdenum, tin and tung-sten comprising electrodialytically transferring alkali metal cations of an aqueous solution of a water soluble alkali metal salt of the oxide of the said element from an anode compartment of an electrolytic cell to a cathode compartment of the electro-lytic cell while essentially preventing the migration of metal oxide into the cathode compartment by positioning a cation permselective membrane between the anode com-partment and the cathode compartment while carefully and continuously controlling the pH of the solution and removing the so-produced sol from the anode compartment of the electrolytic cell.
2. The method of claim 1 wherein the catholyte is an alkali metal hy-droxide solution.
3. The method of claim 2 wherein the alkali metal hydroxide is sodium hydroxide.
4. The method of claim 1 wherein the alkali metal salt is Na2SbO3 and the pH is maintained at 9.5 to 10.5.
5. The method of claim 1 wherein the alkali metal salt is Na2MoO3 and the pH is maintained at 2.5 to 3.5.
6. The method of claim 1 wherein the alkali metal salt is Na2SnO2 and the pH is maintained at 10.3 to 10.8.
7. The method of claim 1 wherein the anode compartment is provided with a plurality of particles which are fluidized and impinge on the anode so as to substantially prevent the deposition of silica thereon.
8. The method of claim 7 wherein the particles are in the form of glass beads.
9. A stannic oxide sol produced by the process of claim 6.
10. A molybdenum oxide sol produced by the process of claim 5.
11. An antimony oxide sol produced by the process of claim 4.
