Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE:
A continuous casting plant, in particular a steel slab casting plant, includes a continuous mould arranged below a tundish with an outflow opening from which molten metal flows through a casting tube into the continuous mould, the tundish being arranged laterally above the continuous mould, thus leaving free the vertical space above the continuous mould.
Description
The invention relates to a continuous casting plant, in particular a steel slab casting plant, provided with a continuous mould and a tundish arranged above the mould, out of which molten metal flows through an outflow opening into the mould, via a casting tube ending below the metal level in the mould.
; In known plants of this kind, the tundish is arranged directly above the mould, the molten metal flowing into the mould through a casting tube inserted in the bottom of the tundish and extending vertically into the mould cavity. Here, it is disadvantageous that the tundish to a great ; 10 extent covers the mould cavity, so that the mould cavity and the bath level therein are thus difficult to observe and reach, particularly in case of narrow and small casting cross sections. Therefore, observation of the bath, taking out slag crusts and removing skulls resulting from overflow, are very difficult to perform in continuous casting plants of known construction.
The invention aims at avoiding these disadvantages and difficulties and has as its object to create a continuous casting plant in which the bath level in the mould during casting is accessible without hindrance and can -` readily be observed, and in which slag crusts and skulls can be removed easily.
The invention provides in a continuous steel casting plant, of the type including a continuous mould for casting slabs having a mould cavity, a tundish with side walls arranged above the continuous mould and having an outflow opening, and a refractory material casting tube arranged so as to connect said outflow opening with said continuous mould, molten steel flowing from ~aid outflow opening through said casting tube into said continuous mould and forming a metal level therein, said casting tube ending below said metal level in said continuous mould, the improvement characterized in that said tundish is arranged laterally above said continuous mould so as to leave . ~ .

Since the outflow opening is provided on the side wall of the tundish the accessibility of the casting tube fastening is good, so that the casting tube can be exchanged more easily and rapidly than hitherto.

approximately L-shaped stopper displaceable in horizontal direction.
The stopper advantageously can be closeable with a slider arranged on the outer side of the side wall.
Flow conditions are favourable, if the casting tube is annexed to the outflow opening with a horizontally extending tube section, from which a vertically directed tube section pro-jects into the mould cavity.
In order to prevent slag from flowing into the mould, the outflow opening is suitably arranged in a depression of the tundish.
The invention shall now be described in more detail by ; way of two embodiments and with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figs. 1 and 2 are each one embodiment in the vertical sectionl schematically illustrated.
A tundish is denoted by 1, into which molten steel 2 is poured from a casting ladle not illustrated. Below the tundish a water cooled continuous mould 3 is arranged, the molten steel flowing from an outflow opening 5 of the tundish through a castiny tube 6 into the mould cavity 4.
According to the invention the tundish 1 is arranged laterally above the mould 3, so that the space 7 above the mould cavity 4 remains free and the cavi-ty 4 is not covered by the bottom 8 of the tundish.
The outflow opening 5 is provided on the side wall 9 of the tundish, which is most closely arranged to the mould, in the ; region of a depression 10 of the bottom 8. The casting tube is fastened on the outer side of -the side wall 9 by means of a bayonet catch 11. The casting tube comprises a tube section 12
