The invention relates to smoke generating compositions for screen-ing purposes and which are stable in storage, comprising a particulate mix-ture containing a highly chlorinated organic compound and a silicon-aluminium alloy.
Description
This invention relates to smoke generating compositions which on ignition produce a considerable amount of dense smoke, generally, but not exclusively, for screening purposes.
The invention provides smoke generating compositions which are stable in storage, particularly with regard to corrosion by water, and which can produce dense smoke for relatively long periods.
In accordance with the invention, a smoke generating composition comprises a particulate mixture containing a highly chlorinated organic compound or compounds and a silicon-aluminum alloy.
The organic compound may be a chlorinated derivative of an alkane, an alkene or an aromatic compound, and may be a solid or a liquid. Examples of such compounds are, hexachloroethane; hexachlorobenzene; pentachloro-nitrobenzene; tetrachlorophthalic Anhydride; car~on tetrachloride; pentachloro-ethane; 1,1,2,2,-tetrachloroethane; 1,1,1,2-tetrachloroethane; 1,1,2-trichloroethane; l,l,l-trichloroethane; tetrachloroethylene; hexachloro-propene; hexachloro- l,3-butadiene and hexachloroacetone.
- The silicon-aluminum alloy should contain 10 to 15 per cent silicon and is preferably the 13 per cent silicon - 87 per cent aluminwm eutectic alloy. -The composition may contain other constituents such as7zinc oxide, magnesium carbonate, calcium carbonate kaolin and Kiesulguhr.
Particular compositions in accordance with the invention in per cent by weight proportions are as follows:
Example-l Hexachloroethane 45%
Zinc oxide 50 - 35%
Al/Si Alloy (87/13) 5 - 20%
