Description
1053~
Th~ presen-t lnvelltion relates to containers, and more particularly relates to a two-piece composite container package.
Containers per se are well known in the art and many ~;~
proposals have been advanced for the manufacture o different t~pes o~ containers for the purposes of retaining, shipping and displaying the commodities packaged thereln.
The present invention is particularly concerned with containers which are suitable for the packaging of consumer products and to this end, it is an object of the present inven-tion to provide an economical and attractive container package ;~
~hich afords protection to the commodity and also allows easy access to the container while providing a secure locking package.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a container package comprising a body member and a cover member, said cover member having at least a portion thereof of a generally flat and planar nature, said portion having a pair of opposed generally parallel slits therein, a ~lexible tab portion located in said portion at one end of . :, :- .' ; each said generally parallel slits~ said body member having at ^
least one body-forming wall surrounding a cavity adapted to retain a commodit~ therein, said body member having a pair of .; , . .
opposed flanges extending outwardly on opposite sides from an ;~
end margin of sald body-forming wall, said flanges being slidingly engageable with said pair of generally parallel slits -;
of said co~er member, the assembled arrangement being such that said tabs retai~ said body member in a fixed position with , , :
respect to said cover by engagement of said tabs with said body-forming wall.
In greater detail, the body member may comprise one -l~S~ 9 or more body-forming walls surrounding a cavity which retains the desired commodity or commodities. The overall configur-ation and shape of the container member and thus the body forming wall may be any suitable and desired; in one embodi~
ment, the container member may be sized so as to snugly hold and retain one or more commodities. The material of which the container member is formed may be any desirable; prefer-ably, the material is such so as to ~e at least semi-rigid and to this end, materials such as various plastics materials may be utilized.
The one or more body-forming walls about the cavity -of the container member have a pair of flanges associated therewith whl~h are slidingly engageable with slits in the first member as will be dis~ussed in greater detail hereinafter.
In one embodiment, the container member may be of an overall rectangular configuration and thus, a pair of flanges on opposed side walls may be provided, Likewise, there may be provided flanges on the end walls if so desired. Preferably, the flanges are formed integral with the body-forming walls ~ 20 of the container member.
;, The~a~er member of the container system of the !:
;~ present invention functions, in part, as a cover for the body member and also serves to "wrap around" the body as a protec-tive device. For reasons wh~ch will become apparent herein-after, at least a portion of the cover member forming the locking means must be of a flexible material. Conveniently, ;~ the entire member may be formed of a somewhat flexible mate-rial and to this end, materials such as paperboard, cardboard, flexible plastics materials~ and the like may be utilized.
3Q The cover member also includes a pair of opposed generally parallel slits which are adapted to slidingly engage with the ~ 3 ~. .

~ O~i3~
flanges of the container member as will be discussed in greater aetail with respect to the drawings. The slits may be pro-vided for b~ any suitable conventional means.
Having thus generally described the invention, refe~ence will be made to the accompanying drawings illus-trating an embodiment thereof, and in which: ~

container package.
Referring to the drawings in greater detail and by ; .
reference characters thereto, there is illustrated in Figure 1 a "blank" 10 which may be used to form a cover member for the container package of the present invention. `
CoYer member lO comprises a substantially rect~
angular piece of sheet material such asl for example, a càrd~
hoard or plast.ics material and may be die cut from a suitable piece o~ material. Cover member lO has a pair of opposed edcl.~s ~ : e~9e5 side ~Ils 12, 14 and opposed~end w~b~-l6, 18 with a base portion 20 having a pair of generally parallel slits 22 and ~' .
~.
` ~o~31~ ;
24 formed therein and which, in the case of most cardboard and plastics materials, may be formed by a suitable sharp cutting means. Alternatively, i~ desired, a narrow slot wherein material is removed from the blank may be employed.
As will be seen from Figure 1, at one end of slits 22 and 24, the slits are continued in a somewhat U shaped configuration as designated by reference numerals 26 and 28 ` respectively to form tabs 30 and 32. At the opposed ends, - slits 22 and 24 are continued inwardly as designated by refer-ence numerals 34 and 36 to form abutment edges 38 and 40 ` respectively.
The cover member 10 has a plurality of parallel ~old or score lines extending between opposed side walls 12 and 14 such as are designated by reference numerals 42, 44!
46~ 48, 50 and 52. The use of such score or fold lines is ,. . .
well known in the art and need not be explained in greater detail herein. As may be seen from the drawings, these fold lines provide a top portion 5~, a first end portion 56, a second end portion 58, and portions 60, 62 and 6~ which are folded on each other as will be shown hereinafter.
,~: : : ;~ :
On~end margin 16, slots 66 ana 68 are "cut out"
~rom the blank thus forming a tab portion 70. Portion 60 ~ ;
has a slit 72 therein adapted to receive tab 70.
The body member is designated by reference numeral 74 in Figure 2 and reference wLll now be made thereto. Body member 74 is of a substantially~rectangular configuration having flanges 76, 78, 80 and 82 extending outwardly from the body-~orming walls. As illustrated, body member 74 may con~
veniently include a plurality of apertures within the member adapted ~to receive commodities.
In assembling the container of the pr~sent invention, ~-S
.. ' ~` ~
~g)~
flanges 80 and82 fit within slits 24 and 22 respectively.
During the procedure of placing body member 74 therein, tabs 30 and 32 are lifted to permit the entry of the container member. After being so placed, tabs 30 and 32 are folded downwardly whereby they are juxtaposed to a body~forming wall of container member 74 and securely lock the same in position.
Furthermore~ as may be seen ~rom Figure 2, abutment edges 38 and 40 ~ormed at the terminal ends of slits 22 and 24 abut the opposed body-forming wall o~ body member 74.
Following insertion of body member 74 in slits 22 and 24, the cover member blank is folded about fold or score lines 46, 48, 50 and 52 in the manner illustrated in Figure 4.
Wall portion 64 may then be secured to base 20, i~ so desired, by any suitable means.
Subsequently, cover member 10 is folded on fold or score lines 44 and 42 and tab 70 is inserted in slit 72 as illustrated in Figure 5. As may be seen, there is thus pro-vided a container which is well secured and suitable for the packaging and retention of many commodities. `~
It will be obvious from the ~ove description that many modifications may be made to the above described embodi-ment without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
