Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
The disclosure describes a method of packaging articles such as books in a protective cover. The method comprises the steps of (a) affixing a strip of paper or the like about the book in a direction parallel to the spine of the book, and (b) wrapping a protective sheet of cardboard about the book in a direction transverse to the paper strip, affixing the protective sheet to the paper strip by glueing, and joining the protective sheet ends by means such as staples. The method provides useful protective mailing packages which can quickly be formed by relatively simple packaging machinery.

Description
lOS;~3 ~he present invention concerns a packaging procedure, in parti-cular for packaging books for shipment by mail, wherein the book to be packaged is surrounded with a protective cover made by folding of a sheet-like material, in particular of cardboard.
The packaging of book parcels by packaging methods of prior art is slow and involves considerable costs. It is especially the complex folding of the packaging cover, and frequently also requisite cuts, by which limitations are imposed on the speed of the packaging machines and complex and expensive packaging machines are made necessary.
The object of the invention is to teach a new packaging method wherein the steps required for the packaging of a book are as few as possible, and simple, and by which in spite of this a well-protecting package can be obtained. At the same time it is another object of the packaging procedure according to the invention to ~nable a packaging machine to be used which is as fast in operation, reliable in use and simple of its construc-~ tion as possible.
L'. The present invention is broadly defined as a method of packaging , 20 a book comprising the steps of winding an elongate strip of paper circumferentially about a book in a direction parallel to the spine of the strip together against a surface of the book;
thereafter placing the book on one half of a rectangular cardboard sheet with the spine of the book spaced from and parallel to a first pair of opposed edges of the sheet, the first pair of edges ~, -~ of the cardboard sheet having a length exceeding the length of ~r the spine of the book, and the other pair of opposed edgeshaving a length exceeding twice the width of the book; folding B

Fig. 3 shows the completed package.
From a roll 1 a continuous paper strip 2 is pulled.
In Fig. 1, the book to be packaged, 3, is seen from the side of its back. On the paper strip 2 glue is applied at A, and it is cut off at B. By the aid of action means of the packag-ing machine, which have not been depicted, the paper strip 2 is wound about the book 3.
The book 3 with its enclosing paper strip 2 is - placed in the manner shown in Fig. 2 in a cardboard sheet 4 cut to have the shape of a book cover. The strip 2, or the equivalent points on the cardboard sheet 4, are supplied with glue substance 7. It is thus understood that the paper strip 2 is intended to serve as glueing protection for such bonding of the book to the folded cardboard sheet 4, which in folded condition is open at its ends. In connection herewith the strip 2 must have a direction such that it passes through the open ends of the cardboard sheet 4. The folded cardboard sheet 4 constitutes the protective package proper. It can be provided with an opening or "window" 5, where a pre-printed ; payment form/address card can be inserted. Alternativeiy, a . .~ .
glued-on addressing envelope may be used instead of the window 5.
The package is closed by joining the edges of the protective cover 4 e.g. as shown in Fig. 3 with fixing staples 6.

105;~6~3 It is obvious that the invention is not confined to the embodiment just presented, but that the external appearance of the package may even considerably vary. For instance, the package is suitable for packaging one or several books. The protective cover 4 may be embossed with folding lines 8, which may have a variable distance. The essential point of the invention is the idea that a strip wound around the book is used and with the aid of which the book is affix-able in a simple manner in the folded protective cover. The protective cover 4 need not necessarily be provided with embossed folding lines 8: it may be allowed to shape itself freely around the book to be packaged, in accordance with its size. It is then achieved that the protective cover 4 is firmly tightened around the book.
