Abstract
Purification of metal-contaminated petroleum coke of high sulphur content to form metallurgical grade coke is effected by (1) preoxidising the coke at 650-850 degrees F to substantially increase its surface area (2) contacting the coke with synthesis gas at 275-430 degrees F to convert the contaminating metals into gaseous carbonyls, (3) separating the metal carbonyls from the effluent synthesis gas, and (4) hydrodesulphurising the coke in the presence of synthesis gas at >1300 degrees F. The carbonylation of the metal impurities e.g. Ni, Fe and V is pref. effected at 450-750 psig, the sulphur present in the coke serving to accelerate the reaction. The metal carbonyls may subsequently be thermally decomposed to provide high grade metals. The synthesis gas for the hydrodesulphurisation is pref. simultaneously generated in that step by gasifying a part of the coke with oxygen and steam.
