Abstract

Formation of carbon deposits in apparatus used for treating liquid hydrocarbons at an elevated temp. is prevented by incorporating in the liquid hydrocarbon a liposoluble copolymer of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, each of which contains only one polymerisable ethylene bond, at least one of the components being free of amine function and contg. 4-18C atoms in an aliphatic chain not forming a part of the main chain of the polymer, and one component contg. a basic amine N atom in a side chain of the polymer, which contains O. 1-3.5% of this basic amine N atom. Used for preventing carbon deposits in apparatus used for distilling, reforming, cracking, isomerising, dehydrogenating, alkylating, and polymerising liquid hydrocarbons. Good heat transfer is maintained in the apparatus.
