Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc / Clms Page number 1>
The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of artificial tobacco leaves, according to which a tobacco powder is prepared which is suspended in an aqueous colloidal solution of binders and film-forming products, said suspension then being extended in the form of a thin film which, by exchange, produces an artificial tobacco leaf.
The main object of the present invention is to provide such a process which gives rise to a final product of good quality and which can be used at advantageous economic conditions.
For this purpose, a film-forming product of prtelnic nature and / or a film-forming product of polyvinyl nature is used.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In an advantageous embodiment, an aqueous colloidal solution of gelatin is employed.
In a preferred embodiment, use is made of vinyl polymers.
In a particular embodiment, polyvinyl alcohols are employed.
Other details and features of the invention will emerge from the description of a process for manufacturing artificial tobacco leaves, given below by way of non-limiting example.
Tobacco powder is obtained by very thorough grinding of tobacco or tobacco waste. If the aim is to recover tobacco waste, obviously waste is used, but if it is desired to facilitate the manufacture of tobacco-based smoking products and to make it more economical, use can also be made. of good quality tobacco mixed or not with waste.
The fine powder thus obtained is kneaded in a solution, which will be described below, until a fine suspension is obtained which is sufficiently homogeneous and more or less viscous. The solution used for this purpose is an aqueous colloidal solution of proteins and / or of curable and / or flocculable vinyl polymers. This support serves as a dispersion medium and binder for the tobacco powder.
Various products can be added to the aqueous colloidal solution, either to adjust and improve the quality of the final product, or to facilitate the later stages of the manufacture of the sheet. For example, products are added which make the final product insoluble in water. For this purpose use is made of actual hardeners which form transverse bonds between the macromolecular chains of the binders. These are products such as formalin, glyoxal, borax, boric acid etc. It is also possible to add products serving to regulate the pH as well as plasticizers, such as glycerin and sorbitol.
You can also add other hydrocolloids to adjust the viscosity of the dough.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
formed by colloidal solution, such as cellulose ethers
EMI3.1
b7fn, soluble cu. (methylcellulose, Na-carboxymethylellulose, etc.)
It is also possible to add surface-active products, such as saponins of alkylsulphonates, etc .; to adjust the surface tension of the dough and facilitate its spreading into thin sheets. Finally, it is possible to add oxidizers, such as nitrates and chlorates, coloring agents, aromatic products, preservatives, products giving a white ash, etc.
After the aforementioned colloidal solution has given rise by vigorous kneading with the tobacco powder to the formation of a paste and after optionally other products described above have been added, a film or sheet is formed. from this paste by any coating process, for example by extrusion, casting or spreading. then the water is removed by any drying process, for example by means of hot dry air, superheated water vapor, irradiation. arouges etc. When the leaf has become more or less dry, it is optionally sprinkled with tobacco powder in order to obtain a more matt surface.
Finally, the dry film is subjected to rehumeotation followed by calendering with or without printing of a certain structure imitating the venation of a natural tobacco leaf. Finally, the sheets formed are either wound into rolls or cut into more or less large sheets which can be used directly in the manufacture of tobacco-based smoking products.
It is understood that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiment described above and that many modifications can be made to it, in particular as regards the number and the composition of the elements involved in its production and as regards the juice transfer of process phases.
