<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

IMPROVEMENTS IN CHEMICAL FERTILIZERS
The favorable influence of the solubilization of insoluble or sparingly soluble phosphal lime in water on the assimilati (phosphorus by plants is no longer to be demonstrated. The principle agent used to cause this solubilization is furic acid which passes tricalcium phosphate in the monocalcium phate state.
This solubilization can only be done with the aid of a large industrial tallation and, as the separation of the lime fate and the calcium acid phosphate would require filtration and evaporation, the mixture of two bodies under the name of superphosphate or plement of "Super". However, sulphate of lime has no reading value.
We looked for a body which would have the property of solubilizing tricalcium phosphate and would itself be a powdery solid and easily workable. We found it in finely crystallized urea nitrate, a non-hygrosco salt and very easy to prepare from urea.
Experience has shown that a cold saturated solution of urea nitrate dissolves more than 65 percent of its weight of tricalcium ph phate and more than 118 percent of its weight of dicalcium ph phate.
It suffices to mix the crystallized urea nitrate with powdered lime phosphate in the proportions indicated above and to spread the mixture on the ground, the humidity

The soil and the rains soon solubilized the fertilizer, which contained about 20 percent nitrogen and 18 percent phosphorus pentoxide.
Urea nitrate can similarly solubilize the lime and magnesia phosphates of Thomas basic slags.
Urea nitrate also possesses the property of neutralizing the causticity of calcium cyanamide and of almost completely dissolving it, which makes it suitable for application even during plant growth.
Depending on the nitrogen content of the calcium cyanamide, 5 to 7 parts of cyanamide are used against 14 to 16 parts of urea nitrate; The result is an easily manageable fertilizer that can extract up to 30 1/2 percent nitrogen.
The mixture of calcium cyanamide and urea nitrate is easily done, there is no release of ammonia or elemental nitrogen.
CLAIMS
The use of urea nitrate:
I - in the composition of chemical fertilizers containing bi- and tricalcium phosphates or other phosphates not very soluble in water in order to dissolve them and make them easily assimilated by plants.
2 - mixed with calcium cyanamide in order to neutralize its causticity without giving rise to any loss of nitrogen while activating its fertilizing action.
