Invention Title: MOUNTING DEVICE AND MOUNTING MEANS Details of Associated Provisional Application(s): No(s): Australian Provisional Patent Application No. PK5456/91 Lodged on 8th April, 1991.
The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us: 1 la- TITLE: MOUNTING DEVICE AND MOUNTING MEANS FIELD OF THE INVENTION: This invention relates to a mounting device and mounting means.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION: There is a need to adequately mount flat objects such as photographic films, transparencies, drawings, posters, papers, display panels and other flat objects.
Further it may be desirable to mount such flat objects temporarily so that, when desired, one particular flat object may be replaced by another flat object.
20 A particular example of the above is the mounting of large photographic transparencies to a light box. This may be done for the purpose of displaying the transparency such as for advertising, promotional or information purposes or to allow a graphic artist to work on or from the 25 transparencies.
In the above example, it is desirable to hold the transparency firmly yet to be able to readily remove and replace the transparency.
The present invention has as its object to provide a mounting device and mounting means.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION: The present invention provides a mounting device comprising a strip having a first material on one surface thereof and 920402, ~spe. 067, GDMAN. CAP, 1 2 a pressure sensitive adhesive on the opposite surface whereby said strip may be adhered to a planar substrate, and a mounting member comprising a channel formed of a bight and two limbs and wherein in the bight there is secured a second material; at least one of the first and second materials being a magnetic material and the other being capable of being magnetically attracted to said magnetic material; the arrangement being such that, when the mounting member is located on the strip with said first material and the 15 second material adjacent, the mounting member will be magnetically secured to the strip and wherein at least one of said limbs may in use locate over and hold a flat object to said substrate.
PREFERRED ASPECTS OF THE INVENTION: 09.
In one instance said first material and said second 25 material are both magnetic materials.
S: In another instance said strip is formed of a ferromagnetic material and said second material is a magnetic material.
This is the presently preferred instance and most preferably the strip is formed of a ferrous material The magnetic material is preferably a plastic strip impregnated with nagnetic particles.
In one instance the depth of the bight and the thickness of said strip are such that the limbs will be spaced from said substrate whereby to allow room for said flat object to Slocate in use between the substrate and one of the limbs.
940124. cmnBpe.0617.GDMAN.CAP. 2 3 In another instance each limb is stepped in a region at its outer edge whereby to allow room for said flat object to locate in use between the substrate and in the stepped region of one of the limbs.
Preferably the mounting member is substantially formed of synthetic plastics material.
The pressure sensitive adhesive is preferably provided by double sided pressure sensitive adhesive tape one side of which is adhered to said opposite surface and the other side of which is covered by a removable protective backing which can be removed when desired so that said strip may be adhered to said substrate as aforesaid.
so* The present invention also provides, in combination, the mounting device as above and a substrate wherein the strip is adhered to the substrate by the pressure sensitive adhesive.
The present invention also provides a method of displaying comprising utilizing the mounting device in accordance with this invention.
25 Preferably the substrate is bounded by a frame which is spaced from the substrate or is stepped in a region inboard of the substrate whereby to allow room for said flat object to locate between the substrate and the frame or the stepped region of the frame.
0 The above combination might occur in respect of a light box or a display means.
In use in light boxes and display means the mounting device of this invention may be used to form a grid or pattern.
920326.cmspe. 067. GDMAN.CAP,3 4 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE VIEWS OF THE DRAWINGS: An exemplary construction of a light box in accordance with this invention which incorporates a mounting device in accordance with this invention will now be described with the aid of the accompanying drawings in which:- Fig 1 is a perspective view of the light box, Fig 2 is a cross-section on line II-II in Fig 1, Fig 3 is a cross-section on line III-III in Fig 1, and Fig 4 is a view corresponding to Fig 3 but showing 15 parts separated.

Mounting device 920326,cmsspe.067.GDKAfl.CAP.4 5 DETAILFD DESCRIPTION WITH RESPECT TO THE DRAWINGS: The light box 1 shown in Fig 1 has top, bottom, left and right sides only one of which, the right side 2, is shown.
Those sides support a translucent panel 3.
Within the light box are lights as is usual.
The top, bottom, left and right sides each comprise a wall portion 4 and a channel portion 6. The panel 3 locates in and is supported by the channel portions 6.
It is to be noted that the channel portions 6 have a width 15 greater than the thickness of the panel 3 so that edges of a photographic transparency 7 may be slid into the channel portions 6 so as to be held at those edges by the panel 3 and channel portions 6.
20 Dependant on the size of the photographic transparency, one or more of its edges would be likely to be unsupported in the channel portions 6 and the mounting device 21 of this invention is provided to hold the otherwise unsupported S" edge or edges.
The mounting device 21 comprises a strip 22 and a mounting member 23.
The strip 22 is formed of ferrous metal and has a layer of 00. 30 pressure sensitive adhesive 24 on one side. As supplied prior to use, the pressure sensitive adhesive 24 will be covered and protected by a removable backing sheet, The strip 22 is secured to the panel 3 by the adhesive 24 as shown to extend vertically. Extending vertically is only one of many ways of locating the strip 22.
The mounting member 23 comprises a channel 30 defined by a 920326.cmaspe.06 ODMM 6 bight portion 31 and two limbs 32 and 33.
Within the bight portion 31 is a strip of synthetic plastic magnetic material 34. That material 34 is held in the bight portion 31 by an adhesive 36 which may be a pressuresensitive adhesive or any other suitable adhesive.
It is to be noted that the width of the channel 30 is slightly greater than the width of the strip 22.
The depth of the channel 30 is less than the sum of the thickness of the adhesive 24, strip 22, magnetic material 34 and adhesive 36 such that when the magnetic material 34 is located on and is magnetically secured to the strip 22 15 the free ends 41 of the limbs 32 and 33 will be spaced from the panel 3 by a distance appropriate to about the thickness of a photographic film transparency so that those *se free ends 41 may clamp the transparency to the panel 3.
20 The mounting member 23 is preferably made of a slightly flexible plastic material.
The mounting member 23 may be readily peeled off and later relocated on the strip 22 and has been found tc be 25 effective in holding photographic film transparencies.
Other such mounting devices such as 51 and 52 may be located on the Panel 3 and another such mounting device 53 is shown extending horizontally.
The mounting devices may take up many orientations as desired and can solely or with the channel portions 6 support and hold photographic film transparencies.
Finally, it is to be understood that the inventive concept in any of its aspects can be incorporated in many different constructions so that the generality of the preceding description is not to be superseded by the particularity of 920326,cmsse.067ODMAN.CAP. 6 7 the attached drawings. Various alterations, modifications and/or additions may be incorporated into the various constructions and arrangements of parts without departing from the spirit and ambit of the invention.
The claims and drawings form part of the disclosure of this specification.
