PATENTS ACT 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A STANDARD PATENT
ORIGINAL
Regulation 3.2 9000 S 0o oo o 0 0 i0 000 0 00 0 0 0 0 «0 e o 0 0 Name of Applicant: GERARD INDUSTRIES PTY LTD Actual Inventor: ANTHONY JOHN ARNOLD Address for Service: R K MADDERN ASSOCIATES, 345 King William Street, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia Invention title: "BONDING AGENT" 9* t Details of Associated Provisional Application No: PK 3128 filed 2nd November 1990 t tc t4 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us.
I
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to an improved bonding agent for PVC plastic.
Hitherto, bonding of PVC compounds has been achieved using a composition containing several different solvents. A typical composition comprises MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) as carrier; MIBK (Methyl Isobutyl Ketone); toluene and tetrahydrofuran, to bind and dissolve the PVC resin; acetone; and cyclohexanone. Thickeners are not included in such prior art compositions.
Considerable problems have been encountered in using these prior art compositions, because of the toxicity (and, S 15 in particular, carcinogenicity) of the solvents. A further j disadvantage relates to the multiplicity of solvents I t required.
t r It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved PVC bonding agent, which comprises only one, nontoxic solvent.
t,,I SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION s" 'The bonding agent of the present invention comprises methylpyrrolidone, a viscosity modifier and a vinyl-based Spolymer. The composition is prepared by combining the solvent and the vinyl-based polymer, and then adding the viscosity modifier.
:30 DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The composition of the present invention will preferably comprise more than 80% of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (as solvent), more than 10% of vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer (as vinyl-based polymer), and more than 0.250% of silica (as viscosity modifier). Other conventional viscosity modifiers, such as thickening or thixotropic agents, may be substituted for silica in this composition.
i-,ii The function of the vinyl-based polymer component is, basically, as a gap filler.
If colouring is desired, e.g. to match the colour of the PVC being bonded or to identify a particular product, then a dye stuff can be included. A suitable amount of dye stuff is about 0.0002% In a preferred embodiment, products of different viscosity are identified by being either dyed with different dye stuffs, or left clear.
Accordingly, the preferred formulation comprises the following amounts of the various materials or components: Range (w/w) e, o a O* Major Component: N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone 04 ee S' Minor Components: 44*1 o .20 Vinylchloride-vinylacetate copolymer Silica 0.250% Dye stuff 0.0002% IThe N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and vinylchloride- 25 vinylacetate resin are combined, at normal room temperature.
The mixture is allowed to stand for ten minutes or so, to S completely dissolve the resin. The silica is added, S adjusting the viscosity to the correct value. The dye stuff is then added, as the final component.
The composition of the present invention is highly effective as a bonding agent for PVC. It grips within less than a minute, and only takes about one hour to fully set.
The composition may be used in any field where a bonding agent for PVC is required. For example, it may be used to join electrical conduits, pipes and other plumbing components, and in the production of furniture.
2 uo* Ilk The following example will further illustrate and explain the invention, but is not intended to restrict the scope of the invention in any way.

PVC Solvent Glue Mixing Procedure 1. Using the drum pump, 1 drum (204 litres) of N.M.P. is emptied into the mixing tank.
2. The dispersion mixer is switched on. The shaft should be approximately pointing to the centre of the tank, in order to create a vortex. The mixer and blade positions are altered as required.
3. The solution vinyl resin (VYNS-3 Resin) is slowly added to the centre of the vortex to avoid pre-wetting or lumping of the resin. The batch is mixed for 5 minutes, Sand then let stand idle for 10 minutes. It should be ensured that all resin is dissolved.
3 0 ,s t 4. The dispersion mixer is switched on, and the Aerosil R202 or R200 is added (similarly to step 3).
The mixer shaft is repositioned to the side of the tank so that trapped air can be removed. The batch is mixed for 5 minutes.
6. The viscosity is checked using a viscosity cup.
7. The vis osity is ad Specification below 8. Approximately 1 lit: justed as required. (See Product re of solution is remnvnd in a 15 D o t ft at a Itt Lt t a It 20 4 O2 sealable container. Green dye concentrate is added and mixed in.
9. The mixer is switched on, and the dye solution from step 8 is added to the main batch. The batch is mixed for minutes.
The glue product thus produced is pumped from the mixing drum into the bottle filling machine. The machine's shot load is set to suit the required amount shown on the respective labels.
11. Once the bottles/cans are filled, caps are placed on and the bottles/cans are packed in cartons.
Product Specification for PVC Pipe and Pipe Fittings; Gap Filling Safety Cement 1. Using a Brookfield Viscometer at 25'C, Spindle No. 2 at rpm, viscosity should be 650 25 (Green) Centipoise.
2. Solid content should be 14.5% 1% (Green) and consist of 85% PVC resins, balanced with fillers.
While the present invention has been described in terms of preferred embodiments in order to facilitate better understanding of the invention, it should be appreciated that various modifications can be made without departing from the principle of the invention. Therefore, the invention should be understood to include all such modifications within its scope.
