300 Victoria Street, Wetherill Park NSW John Richard Farrow 04 4 4 4 04* a 0 44« 0* 4 Address for Service: SHELSTON WATERS, 55 Clarence Street, Sydney Complete Specification for the Invention entitled: "TOILET PAN" The following statement is a full descri' tion of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- 1 The present invention relates to a trap way for a singletrap washdown toilet pan.
Much time and effort has been spent in recent times devising methods and systems for reducing the amount of water consumed by the flushing of toilets. In countries, such as Australia; where there is a natural shortage of water, particularly in the summne months, the relevant authorities have been particularly interested in the conservation of water. Most attention in relation to this problem has been directed at the cisterns and the use of different flush volumes dependent on whether solids or liquids are to be flushed. Such systems add to the cost "t and complexity of the cistern and rely on the user to 0 I) oselect the correct flush volume.
S°o 15 The present invention aims to reduce the volume of water required for an effective flush by providing an 0improved configuration of the washdown pan.
In order to comply with various health requirements the washdown toilet pan commonly used in Australia is provided with an integral S or P trap which holds a volume of water in the pan sump to effectively isolate the toilet S' from the sewerage system. This volume of water must be displaced by the flush water in order to produce an effective flush of the pan. Australian users are also 25 accustomed to the pan sump having a large mouth as opposed to the small mouth used with syphonic systems in the United Kingdom and Europe. The present invention effectively reduces the volume of water held in the pan -2 CPS j sump while also improving the flow of water through its associated S-trap so as to enable an effective flush with a minimal amount of water, by providing a ledge portion in the sump which results in a shallower sump while still retaining the appearance of a large mouth.
According to one aspect the present invention provides a single-trap washdown pedestal pan comprising: a bowl extending downwardly into a sump portion, the upper extent of said bowl being enclosed by an inturned flushing rim, said sump portion having a mouth opening into said bowl; an inlet pipe connected to the rear of the flushing rim for, in combination with said rim, directing flushing water into the bowl and the sump portion, a S or P-trap portion connecting said sump portion to the sewerage system via an outlet portion, o said sump portion having an outwardly extending ledge portion located adjacent the mouth thereof and S" below the normal level of water therein, said ledge 20 portion extending from a wa!l of the sump portion o "I opposite the S or P-trap portion.
4 For preference, the S or P trap portion includes a upwardly inclined intermediate portion connected to said sump portion, the polar axis of said intermediate portion being inclined at about 450 to the vertical., An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- i Figure LA shows a cross-sectional side olevation of a typical washdown pedestal pan, Figure 18 shows an enlarged view of the sump and S-trap of the pan of Figure 1A, 3 L i Figure 2A shows a cross-sectional side elevation of a washdown pedestal pan according to the invention, and Figure 2B shows an enlarged cross-sectional side elevation of the sump area of Figure 2A.
Referring to Figures 1A and 1B the pedestal pan comprises a sump portion 5 and a S-trap portion 6 connecting to said sump. The sump 5 is supported on a base 7. The S-trap is further connected to an outlet portion 8 while the sump 5 opens out into the bowl 9 of the pedestal pan. The upper extent of the bowl 9 is enclosed by an inturned flushing rim 10. An inlet pipe 11 enters a rear of the flushing rim 10 .,nd in combination with said rim directs the flushing water into the bowl and the sump.
Referring to Figures 2A and 2B, which show a similar view of the pan to Figures 1A and lB but incorporating the invention. The sump size is reduced by an outwardly extending ledge portion 12 which although not reducing visible size of the mouth of the sump 13 it extends just below the normal level of the water in the pan so as 6 t to effectively reduce the volume of water in the sump.
The sump volume is further reduced' by red.ucing the depth of the sump portion by raising the bottom portion 14 of the sump. To compensate for this higher bottom portion the S-trap entry or intermediate portion 15 is inclined at a more gently sloping angle than in Xnown systems.
This angle is preferably about 450. The reduced angle also assists flushing of waste materials through the trap 6.
To further assist the flushing effect and reduce the quantity of water required for an effective flush the upper portion of the bowl, as shown in Figure 2A, is shaped so as to direct flushing water towards the centre of the mouth of the sump.
