44 COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRAL 4 4 Patents Act 1952 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION (Original) FOR OFFICE USE Application Number: PJ2555 Class Lodged: 3 February, 1989 Complete Specification Lodged: Accepted: Published: Priority: Int. Class ;r 49 o o 0 0 00-000 0 0 0000 0 0 0000 0000 0 0 0 0000 Related Art: TO BE COMPLETED BY APPLICANT Name of Applicant: IAN RICHARD McROBERT Address of Applicant: f 0 0 4 0 t of 18 Mirfin Way, Karratha, in the State of Western Australia, Commonwealth of Australia.
Actual Inventor: Address for Service:- IAN RICHARD McROBERT Wray Associates Primary Industry House 239 Adelaide Terrace Perth Western Australia 6000.
Complete Specification for the invention entitled: "Testing Pipes In-Situ" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me:- -1-
I
iK ;k i -2- THIS INVENTION relates to apparatus for testing pipes in-situ.
A major problem which arises in testing pipes in-situ is the difficulty in testing the entire length of the pipe.
Apparatus currently in use utilises plugs inserted into each end of the pipe. In order to ensure that the plugs 00o stay in position they need to be of a substantial length 00 0000 with the result that the portion of the pipe occupied by o S° the plugs is not tested.
0 0 o The present invention resides in apparatus for testing o0oo substantially the entire length of a pipe in-situ with each o0o0 end terminating in a manhole comprising a pair of plates to be clamped one over each end of the pipe with a fluid tight seal, one of the plates being fitted with a fluid inlet to 00.00 allow fluid under pressure to be pumped into the pipe and a 0 o oO00 gauge for measuring the fluid pressure within the pipe, 0 each plate having associated therewith a centering device 0o to be located within the end of the pipe and coupled to said plate, and compression means adapted to engage each plate and bear against a fixed part of the manhole within r which the plate is located.
Preferably the centering device is adjustable so that it can accommodate pipes of varying diameters.
The invention will be better understood by reference to the following description of one specific embodiment shown in j the accompany drawings wherein:- i Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one plate positioned in a manhole at one end of the pipe to be tested; and i Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the plate in the operative position.

3 As shown in the drawings the pipe 11 to be tested terminates in a manhole 12 of conventional construction.
A plate 13 of a diameter greater than that of the pipe is provided on one face with a flexible seal 14 of rubber or other suitable material. The outer face of the plate is provided with a central socket 15 and air connection 16 and 17 which can be connected to an air supply line 18 and an air gauge 19. The inner face of the plate is provided with a threaded spigot 20 which is adapted to be connected to a centering device 21.
The centering device may be a fixed device suitable to fit neatly into the end of the pipe, a separate device being required for each diameter pipe. It is preferably an o o adjustable device of the type shown in the drawings 0 comprising a pair of arms 22 each end of which is o0 0 pivotally connected to one end of one of a pair of levers S 23, the other end of which is pivotally connected to one oo o o o of a pair of internally threaded nuts 24 which are mounted 0 .000 on a threaded spindle 25, one end thereof having a left hand thread and the other end having a right hand thread.
By rotation the spindle 25 the arms 22 can be moved apart aGG8 till they engage the wall of the pipe.
o 0 In use after the centering device has been placed in position the plate is connected thereto by screwing the spigot 20 to the spindle 25. One end of a hydraulic jack 26 is positioned in the socket 15 with the other end of the jack supported on a suitable structure positioned on the opposite wall of the manhole. The jack is then operated to press the plate into sealing engagement with the wall of the manhole and the end of the pipe. The other end of the pipe is sealed in the same way in the next manhole. Air at the required pressure is then pumped into the sealed pipe and the gauge watched to determine if there are any leaks.

Claims (1)
- 4. o THE CLAIMS defining the invention are as follows:- 1i. Apparatus for testing substantially the entire length of a pipe in-situ with each end terminating in a manhole comprising a pair of plates to be clamped one over each end of the pipe with a fluid tight seal, one of the plates being fitted with a fluid inlet to allow fluid under O pressure to be pumped into the pipe and a gauge for 0 o measuring the fluid pressure within the pipe, each plate o 0 0having associated therewith a centering device to be 0o 0located within the end of the pipe and coupled to said o0 0 plate, and compression means adapted to engage each plate and bear against a fixed part of the manhole within which the plate is located. 2. Apparatus as claimed in clasim 1 wherein the centering 000° 0device is adjustable so that it can accommodate pipes of 0 0 varying diameters. S3. Apparatus as claimed in claim 2 wherein the centering device comprises a pair of arms each end of which is pivotally connected to one end of one of a pair of levers, the other end of which is connected to one of a pair of internally threaded nuts which are mounted on a threaded spindle, one end of the spindle having a left hand thread and the other end of the spindle having a right hand thread so that by rotating the spindle the arms may be moved into and out of engagement with the wall of the pipe. 4. Apparatus as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the compression means comprising a hydraulic jack one end of which is positioned within a socket on the plate with the other end supported on a suitable structure positioned on the opposite wall of the manhole within which the plate is located. M Apparatus for testing the entire length of a pipe in-situ each end of the pipe terminating in a manhole substantially as herein described and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
