Complete Specification for the invention entitled: IMPROVEMENTS IN RELATION TO ROOFING ELEMENTS The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to US 2 This invention relates to roofing elements, and is particularly concerned with skylights integrally formed therewithin.
Skylights fitted flush with a roof line are known. A disadvantage of such articles can be the difficulty experienced in achieving a watertight nexus between such lights and surrounding roofing panels, and the degree of i skill required to fit waterproof flashings o therebetween.
A further disadvantage of such conventional lights can be their propensity to trap water about the light's periphery, which subsequently can deletoriously effect surrounding structures.
0e S Accordingly, it is envisaged that there is a need for weatherproof skylight of a size commensurate to conventional roofing panels, that is easily fitted and need not require utilisation of complex flashings. Thus the object of the present invention is to provide a skylight that can go some way toward satisfying the above desiderata.
In a broad aspect of this invention there is provided a roofing element adapted to be mounted about an aperture i formed within a patterned section of a building, the roofing element characterized pellucid upstanding section incorporated disposed within and stands proud of a s patterned surround flashing, and wherein ti of the upstanding section is bounded on at side thereof by liquid directive means.

0 The foregoing summary, as well as the following description of the presently preferred embodiments of the invention, will be better understood when read in conjunction with the appended drawings.
It will be understood however, that this invention is not limited to the precise arrangements illustrated, and that in further describing the invention, reference is made to a preferred form, which should be considered in all its novel aspects, and which is given by way of example only.
In the drawings FIGURES ONE and TWO are cross-sectional and plan views respectively of a non-ventilated skylight formed in accordance with the present invention.
4 FIGURES THREE and FOUR are also cross-sectional and plan views of a ventilated skylight formed in accordance with the present invention.
FIGURE FIVE is a further cross-sectional view of a non-ventilated skylight formed in accordance with the present invention, as installed in an upper section of a building.
Referring to the drawings, wherein like numerals .indicate like elements through-out the views, it can be seen that the present invention provides for a roofing element 10 comprising an inner pellucid section 11 o 0" standing proud of a surround flashing 12 profiled and dimensioned to be commensurate to a patterned .i a p*r. 13 so that the need for cutting of conventional r-oo r-f -13 and associated time consuming installation tasks for skylight fitting and insertion *o a can be minimised.
Generally the surround flashing 12 will be of a corrugated profile, and can be mounted both on a flat or inclined surface.
The pellucid section 11 is integral with the surround flashing 12 and in situ extends upwardly and preferably centrally of the surround flashing 12 and aperture 14 formed within the roof.
The profile of the surround flashing 12, being complementary to the profile of the roof 13, allows adaption for seating thereon, and can be attached thereto by a variety of readily available and/or conventional and/or conventional fasteners.
Thus when it is desired to fit a roofing element formed in accordance with the present invention to a roof 13 of a building, a portion of the in situ roof 13 *fee is simply removed or cut away therefrom to form a light transmitting aperture 14 in the roofline of the "building.
The roofing element 10 is seated preferably centrally over the aperture 14, and with its patterned surround flashing 12 engaging with the pattern of the roofline.
Silicone or other sealants can be disposed between the *I surround flashing 12 and patterned roofline to prevent the ingression the ingression of water and moisture.
S: Unless preformed, mounting holes can be drilled through the surround flashing 12 and roofline surrounding the aperture 14 for receiving attachment fasteners.
In one embodiment, the roofing element 10 is formed about a mould from a woven fibre reinforced plastics material with the surround flashing 12 of a suitable 0 S- 6 tincture to match a desired coloured roof 13, and can include, therewithin, means to inhibit breakdown of the material when exposed to longterm ultra-violet radiation.
Those skilled in the art will appreciate that in alternative forms of this invention, the colour, profile and dimensions of the element's surround flashing 12 can be manufactured to compliment a variety of available roof cladding systems.
0 In a further constructional form of this invention the 000 •element can be blown or vacuum formed from a sheet of acrylic plastics material.
Use in this regard has been made of polymethyl methacrylate sheet, having a gauge approximating three millimetres.
Other varieties of draw-moulded and/or vacuum formed materials can be utilized where suitable.
Use of blown and/or moulded glass materials is particularly envisaged.
i In the preferred embodiment, corrugations or other patterning of the surround flashing 12 do not extend about the entire perimeter of the upstanding pellucid section 11 but depends into a channel 15. duct or similar liquid directive means provided thereabout, so

that in use, precipitated water is not entrapped, but channelled toward a proximate watercourse, such as toward further roofing surfaces, or toward a guttering or roof eave.
The channel 15, adapted to avoid damming, or other build-up and/or retention of water about the pellucid section 11, receives water flowing down the roofing element 10 and diverts it around the pellucid section 11, so that the water has a substantially unrestricted path toward a guttering or eave of the :i roof 13.
a S* It will be appreciated that the pellucid section 11 can be formed in a variety of shapes, and could, for example, be cuboidal, pyramidic, conicoidal or r5 hemispheric.
Furthermore, it will be appreciated that a multiple skylight could be formed by concatenating at least two pellucid elements thereof in abutment.
'I In an alternative construction the pellucid section 11 J 20 of the roofing element 10 could be suitably apertured (as at 14) to provide a ventilated skylight.
As best seen in FIGURE THREE, such a ventilated roofing element 10 could include a further ventable pellucid section 11 to substantially cover the other, and form a r8 double skinned radiously parallel or concentric) assembly that can overcome insulation and condensation difficulties associated with single layered units, and to form a ventilation port 16.
Where this construction is utilized, it will be appreciated that the ventilation port 16 can incorporate a meshed screen (not shown) or other means adapted to minimize the transversion of insects, birds, rodents, or other vexatious intruders entering therethrough into the 0 S' building.
Other embodiments are also envisaged, and hence *additional advantages will become apparent to those in the art after studying the principles and particular forms of the invention as discussed, illustrated and defined.
