Abstract

The invention relates to a method and device for determining the base number (BN) of a lubricant by means of a pressure vessel (3) in which the increase in pressure arising as a result of the introduction of a sample of lubricating oil and a reagent containing acid is measured by a manometer. The lubricant is evaluated in two steps. In the first step, the base number of a unused lubricant is measured in said pressure vessel, whereby the volume of the pressure vessel is brought down to a standard pressure. In the second step, the volume of the pressure vessel is modified in order to measure the lubricating oil whose base number is to be evaluated, whereby the pressure resulting from said lubricating oil is detected and the base number of said oil is evaluated with direct reference to the base number of the unused lubricating oil.
