Abstract

A tank (Figure 1) with sump (5) used for the cartage of liquids which has been designed so that it can be installed beneath the tray of a light commercial utility vehicle. The tank includes a discharge point (1) at the lowest part of the tank and filling points (2) optionally installed at multiple points to allow for filling from the right, left or rear of the vehicle when tank is installed. The tank incorporates multiple venting points (3) and channelling (4) to support the locating of ventilation piping at the top of the tank to allow it to be filled and drained without creating pressure or vacuum inside the tank when the vehicle and tank are positioned on sloping ground. @ @ 2

2017101026 31 Μ 2017 1/1 TANK WITH SUMP AND VENTILATION USED FOR THE CARTAGE OF LIQUIDS DESIGNED SO THAT IT CAN BE INSTALLED BENEATH THE TRAY OF A LIGHT COMMERCIAL UTILITY VEHICLE.

BACKGROUND

[0001] The tank design relates to the need to better utilise space available on light commercial utility vehicles and to increase the safety of their operation via the ability to lower the mass of the liquid being transported.

[0002] Vehicles which require the ability to carry water or other liquid for purposes such as weed spraying or firefighting currently make use of tanks which are placed on the trays of utility vehicles which results in the bulk of the cartage area being consumed and limiting space for other items to be carried. When a liquid filled tank is placed on the tray of the typically used vehicles the centre of gravity is raised and the risk of rollover increases for the vehicle.

[0003] The design of the described tank is such that it can be mounted beneath the tray of the vehicle. Placing the tank below the level of the tray results in a lowering of the centre of mass of the vehicle as a whole. This reduces the risk of rollover greatly. The placement of the tank below the tray further allows the vehicle to fully utilise the tray surface for the cartage of other goods resulting in the vehicle being able to perform multiple functions concurrently adding to the vehicles value to the user.

Claims

1. A liquid storage tank including: a base with at least one sidewall extending upwardly from the base including a section at one end where the base and sidewalls create a sump or lower collection point in the tank; and at least one connection point to allow the discharge of the tank contents accumulated at the sump.

2. A liquid storage tank according to claim 1 where at least one connection point for filling the tank with liquid is fitted to any number of the sidewalls.

3. A liquid storage tank according claim 1 or 2 where a ventilation point is fitted to each corner at the top of the tank to allow the relief of vacuum and pressure during the filling or emptying of liquid from the tank.
