FUNCTION
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001 ] This invention relates to the design of pull handles and locks, and particularly relates to the design of a pull handle incorporating a roller-bolt entrance dead lock with a privacy function.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
[0002] Roller-bolt entrance dead locks having a privacy function are known to provide security. They have been requested by many Australian insurance companies and are often needed for an application for a home and contents insurance policy to be successful.
[0003] One known type of dead lock is key operated from both sides of the door to which the lock is fitted. Such a lock can present problems in an emergency situation when a person inside the dwelling or locked space must have access to or find a key to unlock the dead lock. In the pressure of an emergency situation, this can be a difficult task and precious time may be lost in finding a key. It is therefore desirable to provide a privacy lock which is not only capable of being key locked from the inside or outside, but also which has a manually operable locking mechanism for locking from the inside.
[0004] Our Australian patent application AU 2004100601 also discloses a roller-bolt dead bolt with a privacy function configured for pull handles.
[0005] Recently, there has been a new trend for architectural design homes towards having higher ceilings and taller doors, increasing the demand for longer pull 2017100924 05 Μ 2017 handles that may extend across the full length of the door. However, current designs like the patent application identified above, limit the length of the pull handle as the separate component of the turn snib and lock cylinder prevent the pull handle from extending across the full length of the door.
[0006] It is therefore desirable to provide an alternative design for pull handles that includes a roller-bolt entrance dead lock with a privacy function, that is not limited in length. The present invention is one such design, and overcomes limitations in pull handle length by combining the turn snib and lock cylinder component with the pull handle, to form one complete and functional pull handle.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0007] According to the invention there is provided a complete and functional pull handle incorporated with a roller-bolt entrance mortise lock which includes a key operable lock having at least one dead lock member, and a rotatable spindle to operate the privacy bolt; wherein the complete and functional pull handle includes: legs mounting the handle to a door; a lock cylinder; and a turn snib for operating the privacy bolt mechanism.
[0008] The pull handle and turn snib may be adapted to any shape and size to suit the desired look by the user.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS 2017100924 05 Μ 2017 [0009] An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: [00010] FIGURE 1 is a schematic view of the pull handle and entrance lock assembly; [00011] FIGURE 2 is cut-out portion of the front view of the internal door, with the privacy bolt and dead bolts in the locked position; [00012] FIGURE 3 is a cross-sectional view of the pull handle and entrance lock assembly; [00013] FIGURE 4 is a view of the lock body of the roller-bolt entrance dead lock with a privacy function.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
[00014] A pull handle 2 consisting of an entrance lock assembly having a dead lock function and privacy bolt function is shown in the drawings. The entrance lock assembly has a key operable roller-bolt mortise lock 4 providing the dead lock and privacy bolt function, a lock cylinder 3 and a key for operating the mortise lock 4.
[00015] As shown in Figure 1, the entrance lock assembly comprises a pull handle 2, an opening for the key cylinder 3 and a turn snib 6. The pull handle design will operate with the roller-bolt mortise lock 4 provided from the patent AU2004100601. The key cylinder 3 operates the dead bolts 8 and the turn snib 6 operates the privacy bolt 7 as specified in the previous patent. However in this case, 2017100924 05 Μ 2017 the turn snib 6 and lock cylinder 3 are incorporated in the pull handle 2 and located in the pull handle leg 1.
[00016] As shown in Figure 2, a privacy turn snib 6 is located only on the internal side of the door to provide a privacy function for convenience, additional security, or in the incidence of an emergency.
[00017] As shown in Figure 3, the lock cylinder 3 and privacy turn snib 6 are aligned with the leg of the pull handle 1 as to not detract from the appearance of the pull handle design. The turn snib 6 may be rotated in two positions wherein one position extends the privacy bolt 7 and another position retracts the privacy bolt 7. Actuating the turn snib 6 in either position will rotate the turn snib extension 11 to engage with the roller-bolt mortise lock 4 and to operate the privacy bolt 7. The end of the turn snib extension 11 fits into the reducing spindle 10 which is fitted with a spring 5 to provide tension and allow for variance in door thickness.
[00018] Figure 4 shows the roller-bolt entrance dead lock with a privacy function 4 as also described in patent AU2004100601.
