Abstract

Abstract Drawings Figure 1: Illustrates a spade tyne exemplifying the invention. Figure 2: Illustrates a cross section profile of a tyne. Preferred Embodiment In a preferred form there is a spade tyne (1) including a cutting edge face(2), a body (3) supporting the cutting face(2) and where in the cutting face(2) includes three tungsten tiles each with a cutting edge(5) substantially aligned with the cutting face(2) and the take of the cross section profile to have an acute angle (6) at the cutting edge and an opposed edge (7) of configuration to suit bonding to the correlating edge (7) of the body. Tile are of a triangular cross-sectional profile with the body having a 12-16mm thickness the sides of the triangle are 12-16mm long and are made of nickel tungsten. The tyne is prepared by ensuring the mounting surface of the tiles and the correlating edge mate acceptably. That is, the two surfaces are reasonably flat so ensuring a good support for the tile or tiles. This may mean making a rebbate (8) in the body. It will be appreciated that this provides support for the tile or tiles in longitudinally to the cutting edge. The tile or tiles are bonded into the rebbate using bronze brazen. kaN

Description

1 Description A Tyne With A Tungsten Edge Back ground of invention The described invention relates to a tyne used in earthmoving and agricultural industry. More specifically the innovation relates to a method of forming a tungsten cutting edge on a tyne and also to a tyne so made. Steel tynes are known to the industries using tungsten hard-faced cutting edges. These have an improved working usable life compared with steel. However in some soils do not last long. Refacing the tungsten cutting edge of the tyne is expensive and means machines mounting the tyne must be taken out of service for at least some time. Alternately new tynes may be fitted but this may be more expensive. Items of the disclosed invention to provide a method on making an improved tyne and a tyne so made that alleviates at least one problem with prior known types or provides the public with useful alternates. Brief summary of invention In a preferred embodiment a tyne including a cutting edge face, a body supporting the cutting face and where in the cutting face includes at least one tungsten tile with a cutting edge substantially aligned with the cutting face and the tile of cross sectional profile to have an acute angle at the cutting edge and an opposed edge of configuration to suit bonding to the correlating edge of the body. In a preferred form the body is made of steel and the tile or tiles, in a preferred form, are bronze or silver brazed to the tyne. In a preferred embodiment where in the tyne is a spade tyne. It will be appreciated that the underlying concept of the invention need not be restricted to any particular form of tyne. In a preferred embodiment where in the tile or tiles are of triangular cross sectional profile. It will be appreciated that other profiles can be used which provide a sharp cutting edge and an opposed mounting surface. It will also be appreciated that the mounting surface whilst in a preferred form is a flat edge between surfaces adjacent to the cutting edge of the tile it may be of different profile such as a tongue intended to reside in a dado in the body.
2 In a preferred embodiment where in the tiles is made of nickel tungsten or microfiber tungsten. As is known to the art there are a number of tungsten hard-facing composites which generally include tungsten oxide or carbide in a suitable bonding substrate. One substrate known to the art is predominately composed of nickel. In some forms the tungsten compound is in the form of regular or irregular grains and in others microfiber filaments. In a preferred embodiment where in the body has a rebbate into which the tile or tiles are bonded. It will be appreciated that other shapes may be made within or on the body to provide a supporting correlating edge for the tiles. Naturally, in some applications the correlating edge may be an edge of the body without any marked alteration in profile; that is the edge has the tiles fixed substantially completely proud to the overall body.

Claims (5)

1. A tyne including a cutting edge face, a body supporting the cutting face and where in the cutting face includes at least one tungsten tile with a cutting edge substantially aligned with the cutting face and the tile of cross sectional profile to have an acute angle at the cutting edge and an opposed edge of configuration to suit bonding to the correlating edge of the body.
2. A tyne as in claim 1 wherein the tyne is a spade tyne.
3. A tyne as in either claim 1 or 2 where in the tile or tiles are of triangular cross sectional profile.
4. A tyne as in claim 1 to 3 where in the tiles is made of nickel tungsten or microfiber tungsten
5. A tyne as in claim 1 to 4 where in the body has a rebbate into which the tile or tiles are bonded
