Description

WO 2010/041043 PCT/GB2009/002442 1 ELECTRICITY GENERATOR Field of the Invention This invention relates to electricity generators and in particular to generators using the force of falling material to provide the mechanical power which is convertible into 5 electricity. Background to the Invention Historically, the electricity has been generated by making use of the force of falling material. Typically, this has been provided by a control flow of water from, for instance, 10 a dam across a river or lake. It has also been proposed to use the weight of stone to drive a conveyor belt which in turn is mechanically linked to a generator. Such an arrangement is described in CA2463868. 15 Furthermore, it has been proposed to mount a paddle wheel at the end of a sloping chute. This is described in CN300510129894.5. This arrangement is such that the stone passing down the chute will fall between the chute and the paddle wheel. 20 Statements of the Invention In accordance with the present invention there is provided apparatus for generating electricity comprising means for feeding particulate material substantially horizontally to a location directly above means mounted for movement in response to an external force applied thereto, whereby the material falls under gravity from said feeding means onto 25 said force responsive means, so as to cause movement thereof, further means for feeding the particulate material away from said force responsive means, said further feeding means being located at least partially below said force responsive means to receive said particulate material descending under gravity from said force responsive means, and means for converting the movement of the force responsive means into 30 electricity. Preferably, the force responsive means is a rotatable body. More preferably, the rotatable body is a paddle wheel provided with paddles or blades onto which the particulate material falls. 35 WO 2010/041043 PCT/GB2009/002442 2 Preferably, the first feeding means is a belt conveyor providing an upper substantially horizontal and elongate movable surface for supporting the material. Preferably, the paddle wheel is a substantially cylindrical body arranged with its 5 longitudinal axis substantially parallel to the plane of said surface. Preferably, the paddle wheel extends longitudinally below substantially the width of said surface. 10 Preferably, the paddle wheel is provided with radially extending blades which may be, for instance, curved or straight. Preferably, the force responsive means is mechanically connected to an electricity generator. 15 Preferably, the electricity generator is an alternator or an electric motor. An example of the latter is an EFF1/EFF2 motor in regeneration capacity mode. Preferably, the electricity generator is electrically connected to means for utilising or 20 storing the generated electric power. For instance, the generator may be connected to batteries or to means for charging electrically driven vehicles such as cars, vans or trucks. Preferably, the further means is a belt conveyor providing a further elongate, movable 25 surface onto which the material falls. Preferably, the particulate material is stone, for instance, granite or limestone or is any other mined material. 30 By mounting the paddle wheel directly underneath the end of the conveyor, such that the stone (or other material) falls by gravity directly onto the blades of the paddle wheel, the full weight of the stone is utilised. The paddle wheel slows the speed and impact of the stone onto the further conveyor 35 belt, thereby reducing wear on the conveyor.
WO 2010/041043 PCT/GB2009/002442 3 It is preferred that the blades of the paddle wheel or turbine will be lined with used rubber conveyor belting. This used belting is normally very difficult and expensive to dispose of. 5 The present invention also provides a method for generating electricity comprising feeding particulate material substantially horizontally to a location directly above means mounted for movement in response to an external force applied thereto, whereby the material falls under gravity onto said force responsive means so as to cause movement thereof and thence on to further means for feeding material away from the force 10 responsive means, and converting the movement of the force responsive means into electricity. Brief description of the drawing The accompanying drawing is a diagrammatic representation of apparatus in 15 accordance with the present invention. Detailed description of the Invention The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing. 20 Referring to the accompanying drawing, apparatus of the invention includes a conveyor belt I having a substantially horizontally mounted belt 3 providing a surface on which can be conveyed particulate material 5 in the form of stones of various sizes and shapes. 25 Mounted at the delivery end of conveyor belt I is a pair of fixing brackets 7 between which is suspended a pair of adjustable bearings 9 supporting a rotor or paddle wheel 11 having radially extending blades or paddles (not shown). 30 The positioning of rotor 11 is such that the blades on one side thereof extend directly below the edge of conveyor belt 3 and receive the impacting stones as they fall over the edge of the conveyor belt. The stones falling on the blades of rotor 11 cause the rotor to rotate and the stones, 35 following impact with the rotor blades, then fall on to a further conveyor belt 13 whose WO 2010/041043 PCT/GB2009/002442 4 delivery end lies directly below the rotor 11. The stones are then conveyed by belt 13 to the delivery end of this belt. The axle on which rotor 11 is mounted extends beyond one of the fixing brackets 7 to a 5 pulley 15 which in turn is linked to a further pulley 17 by drive belt 19. Pulley 17 forms part of alternator unit 21 by means of which electricity is generated as a result of the rotation of pulley 17. Power outputs 23 feed electricity, at the desired voltage, from the alternator to a destination such as a storage facility or a point of use.
