Abstract

An oil tank for a dry sump engine comprises a housing made from an extruded, aluminium, body member (2) which has three substantially upright communicating compartments (31, 32, 33). The first compartment (31) communicates with an oil and hair inlet (20) and, around the bottom of a peripheral wall (10), with the second compartment (32). The second compartment (32) communicates with the third compartment (33) which is in communication with an oil outlet (24). A tortuous path (A) for the oil through the oil tank is thereby provided. Air discharged from the oil following the path A exists through an air outlet (22). The first compartment (31) is substantially cylindrical and the oil and air inlet (20) is in a tangential direction with respect thereto such that the oil and air mixture entering into the oil tank through the oil and air inlet (20) is swirled or centrifuged to cause de-aeration of the oil.
