Abstract

A paper or carton making assembly has a dewatering press (10, 12, 14) in which the fibre web is in contact with both a non-hygroscopic transfer belt (18) and a felt dewatering belt (20). The fibrous paper web makes contact first with the last de-watering press (14) followed esp. by a surface press (16) with transfer belt (18). In a preferred embodiment, the nip within the last dewatering press has a dewatering belt on top and the transfer belt below. The dewatering press is pref. a shoe dewatering press. The final dewatering press (14) is preceded by penultimate dewatering press (12). The surface press (16) is a gloss press or an offset press which operates against one or both web surfaces , and removes or reduces the dewatering belt and felt markings, embosses a surface pattern on the paper. The surface press (16) is a power-driven drum.
