Abstract

The iron comprises an electrically heated soleplate (3), the desired temperature of which is controlled by a thermostat (5) by the said thermostat periodically interrupting and restoring the power supply. The thermostat (5) can be set by means of an adjusting element (19). The iron is provided with a first and a second indicating element (23, 25), with in each case two indicating states (activated/non-activated). The indicating elements (23, 25) provide information on the actual temperature reached with respect to the desired temperature set. After turning the adjusting element (19), according to the invention the indicating state of the indicating elements (23, 25) is obtained from the turning direction of the adjusting element (19), from the operating state of the thermostat (5) before and after adjustment of the adjusting element (19) and from the old indicating state of the indicating elements (23, 25) before turning the adjusting element (19). As a result, an otherwise complex thermocouple, required in addition to the conventional thermostat (5), is not needed. <IMAGE>
