Abstract
1. Process for strengthening fibrous structures by treating them with aqueous plastics dispersions which are free from formaldehyde-releasing substances and the plastics content of which is made up predominantly of alkyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid and small quantities of alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acids, and subsequent drying, characterised in that the process is carried out with a plastics dispersion which is prepared by taking an aqueous phase containing 1 to 4% by weight, based on the total weight of polymerisable compounds involved in the composition of the dispersion, of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid dissolved in the form of the alkali metal salts or ammonium salts thereof, and gradually adding the other monomers, either as they are or in the form of an aqueous emulsion, under polymerisation conditions to the aqueous phase in which the polymerisation takes place.
