Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

  Process for the preparation of indigoid dyes.

   Austrian Patent No. 53220 describes dyes which are obtained by coupling the reactive a-derivatives of naphthisatins with a-naphthol or <x -anthroI and their derivatives that are not substituted in the ortho position.

   It has now been found that these dyes, expediently suspended in a suitable diluent, can be chlorinated smoothly by the action of sulfuryl chloride, the chlorine only in the naphthol or. Anthrol residue occurs. This is surprising insofar as naphtisatin itself is very easily attacked by halogenating agents. In this way, new dyes are obtained which are distinguished from the original dyes by a considerable deepening of the nuances towards black, as well as increased cohesiveness.

   Example: 37-3 parts by weight of the dye composed of ß-naphtisatin chloride and α-anthrole are suspended in 500 parts by weight of chlorobenzene and 14 parts by weight of sulfuryl chloride are gradually added while stirring and cooling. When the entry is complete, the temperature is increased to 70.

  The chlorination takes place with vigorous development of sulphurous acid and hydrochloric acid. After the reaction has ended, the mixture is left to cool and the dye is separated off as usual.

   It forms a blue-black shiny copper crystal powder that dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a slate-blue color. With an alkaline hydrosulphite solution he gives an orange-brown vat from which the textile fiber is dyed in deep blue-black tones.
