his ; For example, the valuable quebracho extract receives a large part of its components that are important for tanning in an insoluble or poorly soluble form. Although there are various regulations to convert these insoluble or sparingly soluble constituents into tannins which are soluble in cold water, the processes involve a more or less extensive chemical change in the tannin molecule itself.

It has now been found that tannin extracts which contain insoluble or sparingly soluble constituents can be converted into preparations which are readily soluble in cold water, that is to say, concentrated extracts which have not yet been diluted in the tanning liquor. can be transferred if you treat these extracts with such water-soluble compounds that are derived from aromatic oxy compounds such. B. phenols or Pbenoisulfonic acids, with formaldehyde or formaldehyde evolving or reacting like this, in the presence or absence of the condensation promoting agents, and which contain one or more salt-forming acid groups in their molecule besides the hydroxyl groups (cf. B. Patent Nos. 58405 and 61057).

It is also possible to use the water-soluble compounds obtainable by condensation of phenolsulphonic acids or their homologues by themselves, in the presence or absence of agents which promote the condensation at ordinary or reduced pressure, as they are e.g. B. can also be represented by the method of patents No. 61061 and No. 64479, decomposed. One can carry out the present method in this way. that either the finished tannin extracts or their poorly soluble or insoluble constituents are mixed with the dissolving agents, or that these compounds are added to the thin broths. obtained in the extraction of the tannins, added before concentrating. Furthermore, these mixtures can be carried out both at ordinary and at elevated temperatures.

Tannin preparations which are readily soluble in cold water are obtained, which remain in solution both in concentrated solution and when diluted with water. Under certain circumstances there is a simultaneous
