struck mixed condensate. In the first or lower cell of the cell apparatus connected between the retort and the cooler, all of the tar that was contained in the vapor gas mixture then collects, while absolutely tar-free gases and vapors escape from the last or top cell, the latter of which are condensed in the cooler. Instead of using the condensate of the smoldering gases condensed at the beginning of the process as washing liquid, the smoldering gases can also be swept from the start by washing liquids of a similar composition and with decreasing tar content, whereby these are kept heated to such an extent that no condensation of the tar-free vapors occurs .

In this way, a wood vinegar is obtained directly from the carbonization gases by condensation, which is completely free of tar in the technical sense and, neutralized with lime or other bases and evaporated, directly, i.e. without repeated distillation, gray wood acetic acids
 EMI2.1

A more detailed explanation of an exemplary embodiment of the method is given below with reference to the schematic representation illustrated by the attached drawing.

The overheated gases and vapors coming from the retort first pass through the connection T into a heatable cell A, in which, as a result of the cooling through the wall surfaces, most of the tar contained in the vapor gas mixture condenses. This condensation also precipitates part of the wood vinegar, which is evaporated again by feeding steam into the heating coil c of chamber A. The vapors rising from A already show a lower superheating due to the condensation that has occurred.
 EMI2.2
Little vinegar content, but the remaining steam mixture is relatively low in tar and relatively rich in vinegar. The same process is repeated in the following chambers C, D and E.

The chambers B, C, D, E are maintained at a constant level by overflow pipes a. In this embodiment, different chambers therefore prevail within the individual chambers
