Process for separating europium from other rare earths
The Austrian patent specification No. 266782 describes a method for separating europium from other rare earths, which consists in converting the europium present in an aqueous solution of rare earth sulfates into its divalent form by reduction, in particular with zinc dust in the absence of air transferred, then precipitated from the aqueous solution with the addition of strontium ions and the resulting strontium-europium-sulfate precipitate is processed in a manner known per se into concentrates rich in Eu or pure Eu compounds.
It has now been established that the strontium-europium-sulphate precipitate can be enriched with europium to a much greater extent. According to the invention, this is achieved by stirring the precipitated strontium-europium sulfate with the exclusion of air, preferably under reducing conditions, with dilute, non-oxidizing acids, preferably with dilute sulfuric acid, a significant proportion of the rare earths being dissolved. This requires a stirring time of about 1/2 to 5 hours. Very little europium goes into solution during this agitation. The precipitate is filtered off from the solution. This post-treatment can be directly connected to the precipitation of the strontium-europium sulfate.

stirs. At the end of the stirring the pH was about 2.
After filtering, the precipitate was separated from the solution, which had an e value of <0.1. The enriched sulfate had an E value of 58.
Taking into account the method described in Austrian patent specification No. 266782, the Eu value was increased from originally 0.25 to 58. The total Eu enrichment is therefore more than 200 times the original value.
