Während es beim Walzen von Metallen, wie Kupfer, Messing und Aluminium, im allgemeinen ohne weiteres möglich ist, gegossene Barren oder Platinen mit hohen Stichabnahmen unmittelbar auf Bleche oder feine Stangen von beliebiger Dicke in kontinuierlichem Betrieb zu verarbeiten, hat es sich gezeigt, dass beim   Verwalzen   von gegossenem Magnesium bzw. Magnesiumlegierungen, selbst bei Anwendung höherer Arbeitstemperaturen alsbald ein   Zubruchgehen   des Walzgutes erfolgt, das nur dann vermieden werden kann, wenn man sich, insbesondere in den ersten Stufen des Walzprozesses, auf verhältnismässig sehr geringe Stichabnahmen beschränkt. Ein wirtschaftliches Verwalzen ist somit auf diesem Wege kaum   durchführbar.   



   Zur Vermeidung dieser Missstände werden gemäss der Erfindung die gegossenen   Ausgangsblöcke   vor dem Verwalzen einer Kornverfeinerung unterzogen, die durch bekannte Mittel, insbesondere durch plastische Verformung bei erhöhten Drücken und Temperaturen erfolgt. Im Hinblick auf die Weiterverarbeitung im Walzwerk empfiehlt es sich dabei, die Durchknetung der gegossenen Blöeke usw. mit einer für die Weiterbehandlung des Gutes geeigneten Formgebung zu verbinden. Sollen beispielsweise Walzbleche durch Walzen hergestellt werden, so wird man zunächst aus einem gegossenen zylindrischen Block auf einer Strangpresse in an sich bekannter Weise ein Profil von flachrechteckigem Querschnitt   (Flaclisehiene)   herstellen, das dann, gegebenenfalls in derselben Hitze, verwalzt wird.

   Auf diese Weise gelingt es, ohne besondere Schwierigkeiten die verkaufsfertigen Rohprodukte, wie dünne Bleche usw., zu erzielen, da das vorbehandelte Walzgut weit leichter und regelmässiger unter der Walze fliesst als das gegossene.
