Process for cleaning alkaline solutions contaminated with organic substances.

The invention relates to a method for cleaning alkali lye contaminated by organic substances and its essence consists in separating the substances contaminating the lyes by adding alcohols and then decolouring them in a manner known per se with lead salts.

The regeneration of the alkali lye that has so far been carried out in the cellulose and viscose luster industry by evaporation, re-causticizing, melting and annealing is extremely expensive because of the great amount of heat, labor and time required.

According to the invention, it has now been found that the alkali lyes that fall off in the industries mentioned can be regenerated in a simple manner by adding to them alcohols in which the substances contaminating the alkali lyes are insoluble and consequently precipitate.

By appropriate choice of the added alcohols, hydrocellulose can be obtained in addition to an alkali lye of the same or higher concentration, which can be used directly in the relevant industry, while the added alcohol can be easily recuperated by distillation, so that the process is particularly favorable economic conditions works.

The alcohol to be added is primarily ethyl and methyl alcohol.

Exemplary embodiment: 68 kg of 94% by volume ethyl alcohol are poured into 100 waste eyes from the viscose luster industry with a content of 17.85% NaOH with vigorous stirring. The temperature is kept between 10 to 30 ° C. If necessary, about 0.3 kg of lead acetate is added to decolorize. The excreted substances are separated from the alcoholic sodium hydroxide solution by simply allowing them to sit down and filter. This is mixed with the amount of quicklime appropriate for post caustic and the ethyl alcohol in an amount of 67,5 kg (94% by volume) is recovered by distillation in appropriate apparatus.

The approx. 20% strength sodium hydroxide solution obtained is either used directly or worked up by known processes to give a more concentrated alkali or solid, molten sodium hydroxide.
