Abstract

Pesticidal proteins that exhibit toxic activity against Lepidoptera and Hemiptera pest species are disclosed, and include, but are not limited to, TIC2199. DNA constructs containing a recombinant nucleic acid sequence encoding the disclosed pesticidal protein are provided. Transgenic plants, plant cells, seeds and plant parts resistant to Lepidoptera and Hemiptera infestations containing recombinant nucleic acid sequences encoding the pesticidal proteins of the present invention are provided. Additionally provided are methods for detecting the presence of the recombinant nucleic acid sequences or the protein of the present invention in a biological sample and methods for controlling pests of Lepidoptera and Hemiptera species using the pesticidal protein TIC2199. Claim 1: A recombinant nucleic acid molecule comprising a heterologous promoter operably linked to a polynucleotide segment encoding a pesticidal protein or pesticidal fragment thereof, wherein, optionally: a. said pesticidal protein comprises the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 2, 4, 7, 10, 13, 15 or 17; b. said pesticidal protein comprises an amino acid sequence that has at least 96%, or 97%, or 98%, or 99%, or approximately 100% amino acid sequence identity with SEQ ID NO: 2, 4, 7, 10, 13, 15 or 17; or c. said polynucleotide segment hybridizes under strict hybridization conditions to a polynucleotide having the nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO: 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16 or 18. Claim 2: recombinant nucleic acid molecule of claim 1, wherein: a. said recombinant nucleic acid molecule is expressed in a plant cell to produce a pesticidal efficacy amount of the pesticidal protein or pesticidal fragment; or b. said recombinant nucleic acid molecule is in operable link with a vector, and said vector is selected from the group consisting of a plasmid, a phagemid, a bacmid, a cosmid and a bacterial or yeast artificial chromosome. Claim 3: The recombinant nucleic acid molecule of claim 1, present within a host cell, wherein said host cell is selected from the group consisting of a bacterial cell and a plant cell.
