Abstract

A multilayer biocidal composition, intended to provide sustained release of chlorine dioxide, comprises a hydrophobic layer containing an acid releasing agent, and a hydrophilic layer containing chlorite anions. The hydrophobic and hydrophilic layers are together and substantially free of water and the hydrophilic layer is capable of releasing chlorine dioxide after hydrolysis of the acid releasing agent.
