Himalayas produces huge sediment as the young mountain. The Ganges and the Jamuna are draining the southern andnorthern slopes of the Himalayas which are carrying more thanone billion tons of sediment every year.The huge amount of sediment has built up the world's largestdelta and made the river and estuary very dynamic andquickly responding. Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries on earth that would be affected by climate change. Global warming with higher associated rainfall and relative sea level rise will likely cause significant changes in sediment and flood regimes. Consequently, large rivers may be disturbed requiring long periods of adjustment in fluvial processes and morphological forms. Being subjected to upstream condition which is beyond control, changes in hydrological and climatic parameters would make these rivers more vulnerable as well as unpredictable. The main issues of climate change that may affect morphological processes are (a) changes in flood regime due to changes in precipitation pattern (b) changes in sediment load due to changes in precipitation (c) changes in base level due to sea level rise. It is now high time to assess the impact of climate change on the morphology of those rivers as well as the subsequent impacts on floodplain dwellers so that the nation can prepare itself to mitigate the effects. It is expected that this sort of study can be replicated for the other large rivers in Asia. The cross sections as well as the model results (from the General Model) have been inspected and parameters derived for the Lakhya River. Numerical modeling using a two-dimensional model is very helpful for assessing the design conditions of physical structures placed in the river.

Due to carrying one of the highest annual discharges from upstream, Jamuna causes flood regularly and has great hydrologic significance in the perspective of Bangladesh. Hence, assessing the interrelation of hydrologic, climatic and surface water quality parameters in Jamuna is an important study. The secondary time series data of climatic, hydrologic and surface water quality parameters of Jamuna are taken to determine the correlation among these three parameters by regression analysis and also to identify the sensitive water quality parameters that are most vulnerable to climatic and hydrologic change. Climatic parameters include precipitation, air temperature and evaporation. Hydrologic parameters include mean water level and discharge flow. Surface water quality parameters are EC, Chloride, pH, TSS, DO, BOD, Alkalinity and water surface temperature. Two stations are considered, one in Bahadurabad and other near Jamuna Fertilizer Factory and historical data is taken to observe and compare correlations in two stations. Discharge and mean water level in Jamuna have fair to strong positive correlation with precipitation. DO, alkalinity, TSS and EC have significant correlation with climatic and hydrologic parameters in Jamuna. Water surface temperature has good interrelation with air temperature. DO, EC, TSS, alkalinity and water temperature can be identified as sensitive water quality parameters in Jamuna that are most vulnerable to climatic and hydrologic change.

Sea level rise, combined with reduced stream flow from upstream sources, causes substantial saline water intrusion in the coastal region. The water quality in this region has fallen critically of the WHO standards due to salinity intrusion, indirect climate change impacts and inundation by storm surges that have been accelerated by frequent cyclones. Though water is abundant in the coastal region, safe drinking water is not always available to the mass people. This lack of access to safe drinking water results from number of factors. The study assesses and does a comparative analysis on access to safe drinking water at two villages in two districts in the coastal region: Hoglapasha village in Barguna and Sahapara village in Khulna. The study identifies the major sources of drinking water, water use patterns from different sources and the major factors hindering access to safe drinking water. It is observed that the social and economic structure of the rural communities has a major bearing on how drinking water is demanded and sourced from various sources. It is recommended to introduce community-based approach and improved adaptive technologies to ensure sustainable drinking water solution in the region.
