Robert Reid, PhD
Bob is the President of Edge Philanthropy, LLC, a philanthropic research and consulting firm. His research and consulting activities are international in scope. He has a faculty appointment at the School of Medicine – Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of New Mexico. Prior to Edge Philanthropy, Bob served as CEO for a large private foundation focusing on pre-k and K-12 education reform, higher education, workforce training, community and economic development, social services, arts & culture, mental health, and healthcare.
Bob has researched practices employed by, hundreds of foundations and has engaged with professional associations such as the Council on Foundations, Philanthropy Roundtable, National Center for Family Philanthropy, Philanthropy Southwest, Grantmakers for Education, Neighborhood Funders Group, Association of Charitable Foundations (United Kingdom), Philanthropy Australia, the New Mexico Association of Grantmakers and Grantmakers for Education. He lectures to academic and practitioner audiences on five continents.
Bob is also engaged in global development work in South America, East Africa, and Eastern Europe with projects in Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, Argentina, Tanzania, Kenya, and Ukraine. His projects largely focus on women in extreme poverty, refugees, water and sanitation, peacebuilding, healthcare, and microenterprise development. His most recent initiative is focused on women who are HIV positive in Kenya.
Bob has researched many complex issues underlying philanthropic practice such as transparency, foundation-grantee relations, rural philanthropy, foundation collaboration, place-based grantmaking, family philanthropy, and foundation governance. His research findings have been published in academic journals and professional magazines including The Foundation Review, Nonprofit Quarterly, Journal of Community Health, International Journal of Community Well-Being, Local Development & Society, Journal of Vocational Behavior, and Philanthropy Magazine. Prior to his work in philanthropy, Bob led successful turnaround campaigns for over a dozen underperforming hospitals, substance abuse treatment centers, and psychiatric/mental health institutions.
Bob holds multiple degrees including a PhD from Oklahoma State University, a masters degree from Santa Clara University, and an undergraduate degree from the University of Redlands.
