why are the Etruscans never mentioned in Homer’s Odyssey, which reflects so much of the exciting and dangerous world of the early Orientalizing age? Their absence from the picture is surprising, given the existence of the Nestor cup and the remarkably early arrival of Homer in the west. It contrasts with the frequent appearances of the Phoenicians, which agree with much of what we know about them from the archaeological record (Markoe 1985, 1992, 2000; Turfa 1986; Kopcke 1992).
