The cilia were absent in all the sections examined, and the epithelium showed characteristic morphological details. Absence of the mucous elements in the sero-mucinous glands was noticed with evidence of increased activity of the serous units. The capillaries and small arterioles showed severe changes. Electron-dense deposits were seen within the various constituents of the nasal mucosa. It was assumed that the characteristics of the disease are dependent on individual reactivity of a genetically determined immune system stimulated by an undetermined factor.

The current work was carried on 45 male subjects. Their ages ranged from 43-56 years. They were 25 patients with AMI compared with 20 healthy subjects matched for the same age and sex as controls. For all subjects, serum interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor –alpha (TNF-α) and lipid profile were assayed 24 hours post infarction and 6 weeks later on. The results of this work showed that serum IL-1, IL-6 and TNF-α were significantly increased 24 hours post infarction and 6 weeks later compared with the control group (p<0.05). However, serum IL-1, IL-6 and TNF-α were significantly decreased 6 weeks later after the onset of infarction compared with the same parameters 24 hours post infarction (p1 < 0.05). Also, lipid profile showed a significant change in serum low density lipoprotein-cholesterol(LDL-...

Pakistani children between the ages of two to twelve years and diagnosed with pharyngotonsillitis were eligible to participate in the study. Cefaclor was administered three times daily for a total dose of 20-40 mg/kg/day, depending on the severity of the infection, for 7 days. Patients were evaluated on the basis of symptomatic response and antibiotic susceptibility pattern as a result of bacteriological examination. Based on observed pre-therapy signs/symptoms of infection with pharyngotonsillitis, 99% of patients (95% CI=94.9% to 100.0%) were reported as having a symptomatic response of Cure or Improvement by end of study. Group A b-haemolytic Streptococci was the most prevalent pathogen isolated pre-therapy (occurring in 45% of patients). Of all patients for whom this pathogen was isolated, 64% had complete eradication by end of therapy, while there was persistence or superi...

Pre- and post-operative nasopharyngeal swabs were taken to study bacterial colonization of the nasopharynx both quantitatively and qualitatively. Twenty healthy controls were included in this study. The swabs were cultured on MacConkey's and Columbia blood agar plates. The rate of isolation of potentially pathogenic microorganisms decreased markedly following operation, while normal inhabitant organisms showed notable increase in their numbers post-operatively to reach a near normal level. It is concluded from this work that adenoidectomy produces a physiological effect on the nasopharyngeal microflora by conversion of an abnormal flora to a nearly normal one.
