This study looked at innovative library services (ILS) in the Nigerian context through different ways such as online business support service for starts-up; web design services; blogging service; podcasting service; electronic publishing services; online information search service; short message alerts services; online training and workshops; digital references services; database production/distribution services; online entertainment services; mobile application services and digital marketing service. Data analysis was done using frequency count, percentages, Likert Scale presented in tabular format, mean and standard deviation. Using the four-point Likert type scale, a midpoint mean (criterion Mean) of 2.5 was established and accepted as a positive response point. Inadequate funding, inadequate deployment of ICT infrastructure and resistance to change were some of the challenges identified as hindrances to ILS, while risk taking, collaboration, adequate funding, were some of the wa...

The study sought to identify the information needs and information-seeking behaviour of
Road Transport Employee Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) Members in Yenagoa Branch,
Bayelsa State. The specific purpose of the study was to: examine the information needs of
Road Transport Employee Association of Nigeria members in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State,
Nigeria; find out how Road Transport Employee Association of Nigeria members in Yenagoa,
Bayelsa State, Nigeria seek for needed information; determine the problems encountered by
Road Transport Employee Association of Nigeria members in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State,
Nigeria while seeking for needed information; and proffer solutions to the determined
problems of information seeking by RTEAN members. Four research questions were
formulated to guide the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey design and the sample
comprised two hundred and twenty (222) RTEAN members out of a population of 882 drivers
registered in ten motor parks. A questionnaire was used to generate data for the study and
the data generated were analysed using frequency tables and percentages. The park
chairmen were used as research assistants to distribute and retrieve the copies of the
questionnaire. The copies of the questionnaire were administered to those literate members
who could respond to them. The result revealed that their most important information needs
are; information on how to avoid accidents, where to get the best (superior) spare parts, and
to know the most lucrative routes, while the most common strategies adopted to get
information are through union activities, consulting friends and experts. Some of the
problems associated with seeking information include time factors, illiteracy and the absence
of information centres. Solutions were proffer on the basis of the findings of the study that
government should establish information centres in the motor parks, as this will go a long
way in making information readily available to these road transport workers, who also
contribute to the national and state economy.

The sample size of the study was 165. The total enumeration sampling technique was used to determine the sample size of the study. The instrument used for data collection was a self-constructed questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used in the analysis. The findings revealed that students of LIS, Niger Delta University, use their own smartphones, laptops, and other types of digital devices. Poor information search skills, epileptic power supply, inability to provide internet connectivity with free access, inability to manage myriads of information sources, were some of the major challenges of the respondents. Arising from the findings, recommendations were made to include the provision of internet services within the school premises for easy access by students of LIS at all times so as to reduce the cost of data subscriptions for daily academic activities in order to keep pace with information creation use and knowledge sharing. Secondly, the issue of epileptic power supply should be tackled and alternatives provided.

Introduction Communication is a social activity. It is carried out in various ways in everyday life knowingly and unknowingly. Communication is carried out through verbal and non-verbal channels. All organisations and institutions have particular goals. Communication is of vital importance, and failure to communicate will give rise to inefficiency and lack of direction, as pointed out by Beeby (1966). Communication is the establishment of meaning and understanding between people (Kpangban, 1995.) Library administration is responsible for the control and supervision of a library, and cannot function without good communication (Reitz, 2004). The library as an organisation is geared toward serving the users. The library needs a way to make meaning and understanding between the clientele and the staff of the library, in order to achieve desired results. Library administration is the control and supervision of a library or library system, including planning, budgeting, policymaking, pers...

Introduction In this age of globalization, the importance of information and communication technology (ICT) to people generally and students in particular cannot be overemphasized. This is true because ICTs facilitate quick and easy access to a wide range of information/information resources world wide. In fact, it is now difficult to imagine a world without information technology. In this digital age, tertiary institutions strive to be up-to-date in their curricula. The provision and use of ICT is part and parcel of the entire system, to both the students and the institutions. It is one thing to recognize the importance of ICTs and another to know if they are effectively used by students and academics. If ICTs are put to effective use, the essence of acquiring them is to a large extent justified vice-versa. Ebijuwa (2005) defined ICT as tools used for collection, processing, storage, transmission, and dissemination of information. To Anyakoha (2005), ICT is the electronic means of ...

Introduction Information plays an important role in almost every human activity. Its values in the development process have been a topic of extensive discussion. Information dissemination and accessibility have reduced the world to a global village. Africa, like the rest of the world, is experiencing change in all aspects of life: from basic cultural values to technology, which has changed not only the mode of communication, but the concept of time. In Africa, there are different methods of providing information for the people. These are the traditional African methods and the foreign or organizational methods. Objectives This paper highlights the importance of traditional African methods of providing information to rural dwellers for sustainable economic, political, communal, and social development. Background to the Study Bayelsa state came into being on 1st October 1996, when it was created from the old Rivers State. It is located in the major oil and natural gas producing area o...

This research work focused on Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) use in the Niger Delta University libraries, with aims of ascertaining their problems and prospects for improvement. Two research questions guided the study. It sought to as certain the problems of ICT use in NDU libraries and to examine the prospects of ICT use in NDU libraries. Descriptive survey design was employed for the study and the entire population was the university community while the sample size was one hundred and fifty (150) registered library users. The instrument for data collection was questionnaire. Out of 150 copies of the questionnaire distributed to the respondents 140 copies were properly filled and returned representing 93.33%. To analyse the data the following descriptive statistical measures were employed: frequency table, simple percentage and mean ( X ). The findings revealed that there are factors militating against the effective use of ICTs by the library users, ranging from ...

This study explored technologies and initiatives arising from ICT transformation with attendant challenges and how they are being applied to reference and information services in university libraries in South-South, Nigeria. A self-constructed questionnaire was used as instrument of data collection from library reference personnel in twelve university libraries. Frequency counts and percentages were used for analysing the data obtained. Findings revealed that, among other social media, chat-based reference interaction is now the order of the day as most students and clientele prefer using WhatsApp for immediate response than face to face reference interview. Despite the high use of the various kinds of social media by university library personnel in Nigeria, the application of the media for reference services in the libraries was quite low. Though most of the personnel regularly used social media platforms, they did so for reasons order than reference services. The findings identifi...

This study focused on information dissemination
mechanisms for sustainable livelihoods of rural dwellers in
Bayelsa State. The purpose of the study was amongst other
to examine the level of adequacy of the information
dissemination mechanisms for sustainable livelihood of
rural dwellers. Three research questions and a formulated
hypothesis guided the study. The study employed
descriptive survey method. The population for the study
were rural dwellers from which 400 rural dwellers could
respond to the questionnaire were purposively selected as
sample. The statistical method used in analysing the
descriptive data was frequency count and simple
percentages (%) for question 1 while questions 2 and 3
were presented in Likert scale tables. On the other hand, to
test the formulated hypotheses, t-test at 0.05 level of
significance was used. The major findings were:
information dissemination mechanisms range from village
heads to party leaders; most of the information
dissemination mechanisms were inadequate for rural
information dissemination; while establishment of
community library, use of indigenous people, use of Pidgin
English during town hall meetings to benefit the illiterate
[non-educated] rural dwellers were strategies proffered.
The study recommended that for programmes to be
successful, the strategies proffered to curb the challenges
identified by this study should be vigorously pursued to go a
long way in making the programmes work to reasonably
appreciable level. The study concluded that rural dwellers
gender was significantly related to their opinions on
information sources and information dissemination
mechanisms for sustainable livelihoods in the study area.

Keywords: information dissemination mechanisms, rural
dwellers, sustainable livelihoods, gender, Bayelsa State.

The findings identified various kinds of problems inhibiting the use of social media by the staff. Such impediments included: lack of awareness of the various social media and their application to reference services, dogmatism on the part of some library personnel (inability to conform/adapt to changes), infrastructural and technological challenges amongst others. This study has added to the growing number of literatures on social media use in libraries in Nigeria.
