Constantine Zenguelis (1870-1957) was an eminent Professor of inorganic and physical chemistry at the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens. He became rector of the same university (1925-1927) and first president of the Academy of Athens (1927). In 1924 he was called by the Archaeological Service to give his expertise for the conservation of two bronze masterpieces of ancient Greek art; initially of the youth of Marathon in 1924 and later of the statue of Zeus or Poseidon from Artemision in 1927, both recovered accidentally by fishermen from the sea.
The present paper examines the work accomplished by Zenguelis at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. He executed diagnostic studies, experimented on conservation methods and supervised the implementation of the conservation treatment. He published his results in the Archaeological Ephemeris and the Proceedings of the Academy of Athens. The present paper aims at promoting the scientist and his contribution to the conservation of antiquities within the international disciplinary and institutional context of the period.
