Mattress Recycling

Mattress Recycling in Central Florida Saves Landfill space

The Mustard Seed of Central Florida is taking recycling to an entirely new level in Central Florida. By donating your mattress to The Mustard Seed, you are ensuring mattresses are not going back into the secondary market and are being recycled properly –  helping us to fulfill our mission assisting families and keeping Florida safe and clean!

Our services provide pickup, transportation, deconstruction and reporting of mattresses recycled. We welcome hotels, schools, mattress stores, cruise lines and individuals for a nominal recycling fee. For more information on mattress recycling call (407) 875-2040.

Mattress recycling can bring a host of benefits:

  • Employment opportunities for people with limited job skills and training
  • An earned income source
  • Reusable mattresses that can be given away to families in need
  • A reputation for environmental stewardship and problem-solving.  About 95 percent of the contents of a mattress or boxspring are recyclable if the unit can be broken down to its component parts- high quality grade steel, foam, Dacron and cotton.  There is great value in removing these items from the waste stream.  Additionally, mattresses are a nuisance to solid waste handlers.  They are bulky, do not compact well in a landfill, and they create flammable air pockets.
  • Since the inception of our Mattress Recycling Program in 2011, we have deconstructed over 160,000 mattresses and sold their components, saving  3.7 million cubic feet of landfill space and protecting our environment.

We also recycle various other materials:

  • Clothing

In recognition of our mattress recycling operation, The Mustard Seed of Central Florida received the governor’s Sustainable Florida 2014 Non-profit Best Practice Award for outstanding achievements and excellence in helping to create a sustainable economic, environmental and social future for Florida.
