The environment around us is full of materials that can be used to make things. Knowing how to turn natural materials into tools can be useful in a variety of wilderness situations. In this class we will learn how to create cordage, or rope, and how to create a soap substitute from plants. We will learn what qualities makes a plant a good choice for cordage and will transform dried plant material into rope. Time and weather permitting, we will gather and prepare plant material for you to take home and dry to make rope. Dress to go outside in tall grass and get dirty.

Did you know that Missouri is home to over 14 different species of bats? With October bringing the cooler weather and the spooky decorations of pumpkins, black cats, and bats it seems like the perfect opportunity to learn about the different species of bats in Missouri along with where they live and what they eat. Participants will receive the virtual program link at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the program. Looking for assistance with getting your firearms ready for deer season? Come to Jay Henges Shooting Range for sight-in assistance. We will have staff on site to help bore sight your scope or assist with dialing in your sights to your desired distance.

NOTE: WE WILL NOT BE PROVIDING FIREARMS OR AMMUNITION. Please bring along the firearm and ammunition you plan to deer hunt with.

Prescribed burning can be a valuable tool for managing native plant diversity and controlling undesirable vegetation, but it can be dangerous and ineffective when not used properly. This workshop will provide basic information about how to plan and execute a prescribed burn for habitat management.

Upon registration, participants will be given a link to the virtual/online portion of the prescribed burn course. The online course is a mandatory prerequisite. Please bring your certificate of completion to the demonstration burn. Weather permitting, we will be conducting a prescribed burn so please dress accordingly with leather boots, leather gloves, cotton pants, cotton long sleeve shirt, and safety glasses. Participants will learn about burn equipment, burn line installation, safe weather parameters, ignition operations, and other techniques to safely conduct a prescribed burn.
