Recently Turkey has incorporated humanitarian diplomacy into its foreign policy formulation, which reflects the human and value-oriented nature of the new vision of Turkish foreign policy. Humanitarian diplomacy, which is set to guide Turkish foreign policy in the years to come, has three important pillars: improving the lives of Turkish nationals, kin and related communities living abroad, active involvement in crisis regions, and cultivating and emphasising humanitarian sensibilities within the UN system. Despite the focus and emphasis of the first pillar on emigration, Turkey's humanitarian diplomacy fails to sufficiently address the growing number of regular and irregular migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers and the problems they encounter in Turkey. Turkey, traditionally known as a country of emigration, has long been a land of asylum and is on the way to becoming a " migration transition " country due to its transformation from a country of emigration to immigration. The task of the paper is to discuss why Turkey's new foreign policy activism in general and its endorsement of humanitarian diplomacy in particular requires Turkey to revisit its immigration and asylum policies, laws and practices and integrate immigration and asylum aspects into its humanitarian diplomacy approach. e notion of a “migration-terrorism nexus” is gaining political momentum, despite the lack of evidence to support it, and even the existence of evidence to the contrary.  is paper, while assessing the validity of the supposed link between terrorism and migration, will seek to show why and how the crackdown on migration and liberties actually create conditions conducive to terrorism.  e answer as to why we tend to easily associate migration with terrorism lies in the securitization of migration and asylum, which will be analyzed in this paper.  e broader securitizing discourse constructing migration as a security and even a terrorist threat has been shaping migration policy-making for almost three decades. A series of policy practices with a very heavy human cost, such as borderization practices, interception at sea, push-back operations, and the building of fences or walls to stop the refugee in ux, which prioritize border security over human lives, show how this securitizing discourse is e ective or “successful”.  e paper argues that the over-securitization of migration has very negative implications for human lives and rights as well as for democracy and liberties. It seeks to make a case for delinking migration and terrorism and for policy strategies that could be pursued to move migration out of the security framework and ultimately desecuritize migration.

The European Union is facing serious challenges that test its solidarity and unity in the age of insecurity and anxiety. The Eurozone debt crisis, the so-called "migration crisis" and recently the health crisis and economic downturn instigated by COVID-19 have posed the most formidable challenges to the European project and the EU member states. Given a series of crises and challenging questions facing the EU in less than a decade, it seems timely to discuss and evaluate a progressive vision for the future of the EU. This paper argues that the pandemic has shown the importance and urgency of the core progressive objectives and opened a window of opportunity for progressive politics to advance a new agenda for the EU based on social justice, inclusiveness, equality, and pluralism. This new agenda has the potential to rejuvenate European integration while also allowing the progressives to confront the rise of the radical right in Europe. The paper particularly seeks to address to what extent progressive politics could shift the political agenda away from migration and security issues, create a new movement based on new thinking and a narrative in the face of COVID-19 and take an active part in the transformation of European politics and the EU.
