This article aims to examine the implicit and explicit motivations behind the compulsory schoolin... more This article aims to examine the implicit and explicit motivations behind the compulsory schooling reform in England as well as its unintended and long-term effects by analysing publicly available policy documents and key scholarly literature. The analysis indicates that even though the 19th century's schooling project appeared to focus on pursuing some explicit goals, such as creating more qualified and educated labour force and citizens with religious and moral values, in reality it hides several implicit targets, such as controlling the working-class and maintaining the class segregation. Moreover, this article points out the unintended effects of the compulsory schooling reform, including low attendance in schools, low quality of education, increasing demand for higher education and Church resistance, as well as its long-term effects existing in today's English education system, namely the continuing class segregation and evolving state and Church partnership.

Abstract An Alternative Model for Islamic Religious Education: Critical Religious Education Approach Critical Religious Education has been developed by Andrew Wright in the UK. According to this approach, religious education should aim at pursuing 'truth' and cultivating 'truthful-ness'. Critical Religious Education is grounded on the three premises of the Philosophy of Critical Realism: ontological realism, epistemic relativism and judgemental rationality. Furthermore , this approach adopts the Variation Theory as a learning theory. In Critical Religious Education, the primary aim of religious education is to develop learners' religious literacy by providing them with rational, critical and reflective thinking skills, thus helping them to make sense of their faith identity as well as those of other religious and secular worldviews in the modern world. Although being developed in a Western-liberal society, this approach is claimed also to be applied into confessional contexts. This article includes a literature review examining, first, the theological, philosophical and pedagogical basis of Critical Religious Education, then, its contributions to Islamic Religious Education.
This study presents a new theoretical and pedagogical framework based on the theories of Critical... more This study presents a new theoretical and pedagogical framework based on the theories of Critical Religious Education (CRE), Variation Theory (VT) and the Learning Study model with the purpose of improving teaching and learning in Islamic Religious Education (IRE). It reports a Learning Study conducted in a secondary girls Muslim school in London on the topic of ‘Islam and being Muslim’. The aim of this research study is to examine if and how the proposed framework can be applied to IRE lessons, and how it affects the students’ learning. Thirty students of two seventh grade classes and their religious education teacher participated in the study. The data was collected through interviews and written tasks with the students before and after their participation in the study, video-recordings of the research lessons, and meetings with the teacher. Phenomenography and VT were utilised in the analysis of the data. The results suggest that the use of CRE, VT and Learning Study in teaching Islam contributes to students’ learning outcomes by means of helping teacher consider students’ diverse perspectives on religious phenomena when planning and implementing the curricular content, increasing students’ awareness of the ontological and epistemological dimensions of their faith as well as allowing them to make informed judgments about religious phenomena.

The purpose of this study is to examine the role of the Learning Study Model in developing teaching and learning. The research is based on a literature review involving various Learning Studies undertaken from the 2000s onwards in various countries. The study looks into the foundations of the Learning Study Model, its aims and the application process. In a Learning Study, the aim is to deal with an object of learning in a systematic way through a number of research lessons designed in line with Variation Theory, thus bringing about an increase in students' learning outcomes. Although, the primary purpose of learning studies is to develop student learning, it is argued that this model also plays an important role in contributing to teachers' professional development by means of enhancing their pedagogical knowledge and skills. Overall, discussion about the outcomes of Learning Studies is presented at the latter part of the article.
