Slum upgrading since it was introduced in the 70's has been the most successful strategy in dealing with the slum problem. The strategy is evolving and adapting to current circumstances and emerging urban problems. With rapid urbanization and slow economic growth in developing countries, it is becoming more relevant and imperative to understand and continuously refine the upgrading strategy. This paper explores and defines an emerging trend on the physical transformation of house structures as a result of upgrading. As a case study it will examine house structures of an upgraded slum in the City of Manila, the Dagonoy Estate or more popularly known as the 'Hiyas ng Maynila.' Such examination will help architects, engineers, planners, decision makers and policy makers better plan for the upgrading of slums and better manage the development of an upgraded slum.
